Wednesday Night Fever

I had forgotten how it felt having a fever. But last night, as I struggled to finish some work, it came back. I felt feverish all over. My head was pounding and my face was flushed. My whole body was aching. No amount of duvet could make me feel warm, not even with the heat radiating from the laptop, which I put by my side to continue my work.

It is strange that whenever you are ill, well, in my case actually, I think back to the days when Mak would instantly make chicken soup. Chicken soup seemed to be the cure for everything. And of course with moi – rice porridge with lots of ginger.

I was yearning for that last night but the chicken that Taufiq bought earlier was already in the oven. And I had roast chicken instead, with mashed potatoes. And although it was nice, it felt rough as I also had sore throat. The rest of the chicken went into Kissinger who was sleeping nearby.

This is a household where you’d be hardpressed to find any panadol or asprin or anything that spells drugs from the chemist. I was given Vitamin C and cod liver oil and Rehana made me camomile tea. And with that I drifted to sleep.

I think the excitement of last week’s events had taken its toll. It was non stop since last Saturday and the next few weeks promise the same what with Air Asia’s inaugural flight and some exhibitions and visits of some people that I cannot really avoid.

Am feeling better this morning and trudge to work I must. The temperature has plummeted again and as you can tell from the tone of this writing, I just want my duvet and hot chicken soup.

Komen Pak Malim kucing ray yg alim.

Tak seronok, kan kerja masa kurang sihat, kata Pak Malim sambil memahat.
Kadang terpaksa jugak, kata Pak Malim sambil menembak gagak. Lepas tu, balik, dan terus tergolek, kata Pak Malim yg kena gelek.

Pak Malim,
Memang sungguh tak syok pergi kerja masa badan tak sihat, keluh kak teh sambil memegang pahat. Tapi apa boleh buat kita mesti keluar cari makan, sesuap nasi dan beberapa tin whiskers untuk kawan-kawan sejenis Pak Malim, kata kak teh teringat Ray yang alim. Dok kerja pun teringat duvet dan sup ayam, alangkah enaknya, kata kak teh semasa memakai bedak nyonya.

Kesian Kak Teh sakit. Yelah penuh and busy sgt schedule last week. But yg penting you had a lot of fun doing what you did. I can only imagine the function that you attended sempena msian products in harrods month.

I kalau sakit esp with sore throat akan avoid anything oily. Like you, id go for rice porridge. Makan dgn kicap habhal manis sedapkan? Hope you will recover soon. *hugs*

farina, i just came back from your blog salivating from looking at the sambal tempeh you posted. I droooled, but with sore throat, it is not the best thing to have, no matter how tempting.

Yes, last week was exciting and fun and TIRING. But I also prefer some other kinds of human interest stories and events, not one where you have to adhere to protocols and strict ettiquetes. Am never good at that.

Kak Teh, got your msg on my blog. Nak email, takde email add. Nak hantar msg kat fb, tak jumpa your profile. Kak teh dah cancel facebook ke?

Kat london takde jual tempeh ke Kak Teh? I ada baca your story masa you and AG buat tempeh. Kat sini tempeh tu senang nak cari kat specialty stores. You know yg kata organic and/or healthy tu. Regular supermarket memang takde except a few asian market.

Kalau teringin nak makan empeh, jgn baut sambal sbb sakit tekak tu. Buatlah kuah lodeh makan dgn nasi impit. ;)

Alahai Kak Teh...baru je dengar suara lemak merdu di udara.

A time like this, if abang AG could feed you that chicken soup, then your recovery would be much faster I guess :)

Have plenty of plain/warm water, that is what I always do) and get well soon.

Yeah, there are times when tak sihat pun kena kerja jugak. Tapi janganlah selalu macam tu ya.

Do have some rest... and hope you're feeling much better by now.

Salam Kak Teh,

Oh dear, Kak Teh.. your fever sounds bad. Try dissolving a dollop or two of Vicks into a basin of hot water, sit in front of it with a sheet or blanket over you.. kinda like a home sauna in a makeshift tent. I always find this to be the fastest way of breaking the fever.

Perhaps you've been working too hard & demam tu might be the body's way of asking you to go slow! For us, the 'kanji nasi' was always my mother's prescription, but for herself, she would have nasi panas and sambal belacan. Hope you get better soon. Take care.

Take care and speedy recovery, Kak Teh! Hope everything goes well next week. :-)

I was raised by an extremely health-conscious mum who works in the health industry not to 'manjakan' or pamper ourselves with prescription medicine. I believe in using Allah's gifts of nature like pure honey mixed with plain/warm (never hot or cold) water for many ailments. It works wonders, alhamdulillah. Many of us do know that honey is mentioned in the Qur'an as a healer for mankind (16:69), but not many practise it.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. Like SkyJuice, I want to suggest pure honey mix with water. When our Pure Maths teacher was poorly, we visited him at home, and brought along pure honey purchased at Holland and Barrett.

Hope you are feeling better Kak Teh. Must have been "terkezut" from all the hype last week kot :)

Take in lots and lots of fluids. Take care Kak.

Fadhil said...

Kak Teh,

Hope you have taken that hot chicken soup by now. Hot lemon tea could be useful too.

As for me, I'll look for sup kambing whenever I'm down in the dumps. And when the appetite is low, it's bubur nasi (atau org pantai timur panggil nasi air) with ikan bilis goreng.

Seems like the weather in London is still cold. To cheer you up, check out this link -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVBU7Xw9BpE.

It’s Michael Buble singing `The Way You Look Tonight’. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I hope you're feeling better now. I was ill, too, these past few days. Only today I feel better, after 2, 3 doses of antibiotics.

Take care!

wanshana said...

Salams, Kak Teh. Hope you're feeling much better today.

Get well soon!

P/S : For my family - menu orang sakit would be bubur nasi (or oghang Tepeng would call it "kanji" with pounded fried ikan bilis :)

Okay, here we go ! am feeling better and will attempt to reply to all of you who kindly wished me well....from the warmth and comfort of my duvet:

Farina, kak teh dah tak facebooking lagi. I think, FB ni untuk orang muda2 saja kut?
Yes, we can get tempeh here - especially from organic and asian shops. Nantilah, i will buy when i get some fresh ikan bilis from home. Ikan bilis di sini tak sedap. and customs pun very strict abt bringing in food.

Pak Tuo, thaks for the song - am feeling better already. Yes, the weather is so uncertain - unpredictable. It is back to a cold spell although the sun is out.

Kak Teh said...

danial ma, yes, hopefully it is spring soon and I can have that spring in my steps again. But then comes summer, i will have hayfever again!! How I dread that!

kak elle, I need a nurse to manja me.

Puteri, kanji kedah memanglah best. Somehow i buat tak berapa menjadi.

Kak Teh said...

Tie, kak teh dah baiksikti, tapi batuk tu masih ada sikit. Tekak rasa pedih. macam mana nak nyanyi eh?

Dr Sam, dah tak lemak lagi dah...dah jadi serak-serak basah! Oh, I have been having dinner in bed - so, really, I can get used to that. Being pampered ni boleh buat kita jadi lebih sakit..hehe!

Kak Teh said...

Pi Bani, tu laa tu. kekadang, there's no choice because of important assignments. what to do? Am a lot better thanks and drinking lots of water.

Zabs, yes, I heard that AirAsia is offering 200 free tickets!! I thought they are fully booked. arent people buying? So, Zabs and family nak datang ke London ke?

Kak Teh said...

Andrea, it is not flu or cold. Just high temperature, my whole body was like a sauna!! It went as fast as it came. and i was left with a sore throat. No vicks la in the house. But we do have minyak cap kapak and Tiger Balm.

MM, sambal belacan is not for me. Lagi sakit tekak , kan? But last night i had chicken masak kicap - seems to do the trick. Ish, kalau demam macam2 teringin nak makan.

Kak Teh said...

AuntieYan pun tak ada suara? Pi karaoke kat mana? :)

NanaDJ, I know you, like me would make chicken soup and drive all the way to tend to sick friends. I did that once when i heard a friend was ill the other side of London. He was shocked!! I brought soup ayam, of course - true anak emak! and this friend said: eh, saya dah makan. still remember to this day rushing to the other side of London with the tupperware full of chicken soup.

tee, bila kita demam teringat mak sebab masa tu lah mak manjakan kita. Macam mana mak oenat atau sibukpun mak akan layan anak yang sakit, kan?

Kak Teh said...

SkyJuice, my husband is just like your mum. No drugs from the chemist. He'd rather tend to us all night - and give us honey and lemon or some herbs and vitamins. Nasib baik jarang demam. Yes, I have heard the benefits of honey.

DDI, kak teh makan ayam masak kicap instead. sedap tuuuu!! and yes, vitamin C- itu satu kemestian.

Kak Teh said...

Salam Paula, terima kasih blogger friend. am feeling a lot better though i dont feel like venturing outside.

Madam Gold, Jade goody came to fame or notoriety when she was in Bih Brother. she was racist and foulmouth - but sayangnya macam tu boleh jadi celebrity. she had her own programmes etc. she was then diagnosed cancer and is dying - dan sekarang mempergunakan apa yang boleh untuk dapat duit untuk anak2 dia . Tu lah reality TV.

MTT, you too? It must be a global thing. something is in the air. get well soon.

GUiKP, thanks - our house ni memang banyak honey as my other half takes hi drinks with honey. so, it's been tea and honey for me - from Planet organic.

Mrs N, you too? Rumah ni diharamkan antibiotics - susahlaa.

Kak Teh said...

Raden, thanks for dropping by.

Oh yes, fati and I went back a long way. we were roommates, bedmates, classmates, officemates. How i missed her. Hope you are well too. Take care.

RozIlah Kamarudin said...

Take care. I am like that too.. whenever i dont have any appetite, i craved for good old Emak's cooking. But Emak doesnt cook anymore.. *sigh*

Kak Teh said...

Rozllah, you know, my mak cant cook now as well. She'd want too but she'd forget to switch off the stove and it'd be far too dangerous. My sisters would allow her to help with simple things and she'd be so happy.
