A choc-a-bloc start to 2007

It was a quiet beginning to 2007. I had not been well and didn’t feel like going anywhere. So I let my fingers do the walking and looked at my archives. Gosh, I had actually forgotten the second anniversary of choc-a-blog! It was on 24th December 2004 that I gingerly and nervously tested the waters of blogosphere and Dec 24th 2006 zoomed past just like that. Well, actually I was busy on 24th Dec as I was at the airport sending off my sayang mama to, as the media put it “.... Learn More about being a Malay’

Anyway, from my archives I realised that I have acquired some wonderful cyberfriends, many of whom I have met only to strengthen the friendship further. I am touched when I read comments from nicks I have yet to put faces to, I am moved when I receive emails from readers from all over the world who say I touch them with my entries, and I am speechless when I receive gifts and presents from people I have never met. And, I still do not know how to react when I am approached with, “Are you Kak Teh?”

This cyberworld is a wonderful thing when you make it wonderful.

Like I said, I have met many wonderful people. And allow me to share some with you. And there’s a reason why I choose to write about them,

It was while I was reading Dr Ve Thru that I found the wonderful Wonda, a Malaysian living in Japan. She is married to a wonderful Japanese man and she teaches English and Malay. But what made me hooked on Wonda is that, with only one eye, Wonda keeps giving us, her readers, glimpses of life of a Malaysian living in Japan. Wonda lost the central vision of one eye due to
Wet Macular Degeneration disease but she persevered and even if it takes her ages to type out an entry, she never fails to delight us with her narratives. Both her husband and son have been supportive in editing and proofreading her entries. I am so thankful to Wonda who has allowed us gimpses into her life even when vision for her is impaired. Wonda has won writing competitions and had articles published in the Japanese newspapers. There was a time when Wonda wanted to slow down blogging, but for selfish reasons, I told her not to, for only through her I could enjoy these snippets of life in the land of samurais, sushis and geishas.

Wonda’s perseverance reminds me of another friend, who shall remain nameless for now. But suffice to say, it is someone I look up to with admiration. He has been in London with his family for as long as I can remember. When he was registered blind, his determination overode all other feelings such as self pity or helplessness and he decided to write and until now, he has produced three books, and is currently working on another one. He told me, he was determined to write down his family history so that his children and grandchildren could read. Like Wonda, each sentence would take a while for him to produce on the screen. And like Wonda he is blessed with a wonderful support system that is his wife and his children who help to look through his writings. Recently, he won a children’s short story competition and I am still amazed and in awe of his determination.

I have my fullest respects for the likes of Wonda and this friend of mine.

Years ago, when I was just a cub reporter renting a room in Aunty Lucy’s semi in Penang, I used to read to a blind boy, Jason, I think his name was, who used to frequent her place. I remember him wanting to go to the toilet and I jumped up to switch on the lights. Then I realised that people like him although denied of their sights, are blessed with other gifts. They make the best out of something that we take for granted. They see what we choose not to see.

That brings me to another person who opened up a whole new world for me. I have known DrBubbles and his tireless efforts for sick children for some time now. Recently, we have been involved in collecting money for 3 year old Syazwan who is suffering from retina blastoma. He has already lost one eye. And we wanted to make sure that the cancer didn’t spread to the other eye. The internet afforded us the networking that would have been impossible to do say, ten years ago. Through this networking, kind friends in the USA where syazwan was supposed to have his operation initially, collected nearly US8000. Rantauan members pooled together and sent money directly to the mother and those in London met up for a kind of charity lunch. One even offered to pay the cost of the operation first for fear that the cancer might spread if the treatment is delayed. Strangers offered money and even sponsor of food. The cost of operation in the USA proved to be too high and London was to be the best place. The money is now enough, thanks mostly to the generous community in Philadelphia. But while waiting for the doctors’ decision, the tumour in Syazwan's good eye had grown larger. There was no point coming to London. When I received this news from DrBubbles, I just cried and at first I didnt know who to direct my anger to. Should I have gone straight to the press and write aboutthe urgency of the matter? Should I have knocked on doors of people with more influence who could collect money at a drop of a hat? I have told friends who donated and they too were in tears at the feeling of helplessness. A lot of people have done so much but we couldn't beat the speed of cancer.

Yesterday, I received an email from someone in America. We don’t even know each other but through Syazwan, we connected. She was asking me for my address because she was going to send a winter jacket for Syazwan as it is going to be cold for him here. Such is the generosity of everyone. Now he doesnt need the jacket anymore.

Wonda and my writer friend lost their eyesight when they were quite old and had already seen the world and its beauty to be able to describe them in their writings. Syazwan is just three and all these while had only been able to see his parents, his surroundings through one eye and he is very likely to lose another one, even with treatment. But I believe, what Syazwan is not able to see, he can feel. He can feel the love and support and the compassion that people like DrBubbles have given him.

So, I begin this new year with emotions that is choc-a-bloc; grateful for the wonderful and generous friends that God had shown to my door and thankful for the humbling experience after reading and getting to know some people. I am sad that I have not been able to do enough but happy that they is hope that Syazwan too can one day offer us an insight the way Wonda and that writer friend had done to enrich our lives.

God bless.

you know what? it's true....the cyrberworld is, indeed, a close-knit place where we make loads of new friends from all over the world without physical proximity. which is a strange concept to people like my father, uncle, some cousins and friends who only uses the computer to play computer games, watch their DVDs, download songs, movies and (ahem, XXX stuff). Here's to another amazingly productive year ahead, kak teh. I have been blessed to have made a new friend in you.

judy@dr ve thru, thank you. I think my sayangmama is back for a cookery course. already he has been taught how to make lemang, ketupat and today they are making dodol. Have a good year ahead too judy!

anon, you dont know how much comments like yours mean to me. Thank you. I write in simple terms what i feel. I cannot pretend whatI dont feel, so I write whatI feel. You can do it too. Selamat tahun baru to you too and God bless.

marsha, it is great that we can reach out to each other without even moving. I think the cyberworld has enriched our lives in ways that we never thought could happen. And have a productive year yourself, Marsha and God bless.

Today, I spoke to an old friend of mine, waheedah, of whom u met her during almarhumah kak sameena's funeral processions. She told me that u've asked about me. I was glad that i made my 1st move in 2004 at mawar restaurant and alhamdulillah i can still follow your "chicken soup for the soul" entries through ur blog. Writing is ur gift and we'll always be looking fwd to be "fed" with more "scoops" from you, kak teh.

Such suffering little syazwan is facing should make us more grateful of every little thing in our life that we may be taking for granted.

A toast and duah for another great year for us all.

My dear Kak Teh,
I thought you were going to blog about your Mee Bandung. A BIG surprise and then I am moved to tears. I am so, so sorry about Syazwan. I was going to write to DrBubbles about Syazwan but was held up by the busy festive season. I cried when I read that his eye condition has deteriorated. What can be done for him now? Kak Teh, I am not worthy but at the same time, honored to have you mentioned about me. My family and I have come to know you and many friends through the blogosphere. Thank you so much for being my friend. God bless you always.

Adik Teh,

You were a wonderful person when I got to know you in the NST. You're still a wonderful person today. I pray that you remain a wonderful person forever. Your recollection of two years of your blog is touching. I envy you for your boundless energy and creativity. Above all for your humanity and humility. Congratulations and keep up the good work. God bless.

kak teh I am glad I stumble across the blogland and from here I manage to have friends whom I've never met and hope one day be able to.Happy 2nd anniverssary and keep on blogging with your entries.

puskas csaba, I suppose you know wonda better than I do but I do admire her resilience. Happy new year to you and your family too.

nadya, I think Bro Is must be devastated having been that close to Syazwan. We have tried in our small ways but Allah decides. Hopefully the chemo can stop the spread. happy new year to you and God bless.

manal, pls convey my salam to waheeda when you speak to her again. Yes, I remember that night very well when you spoke to me. You wanted to know if I know a zaharah othman and I said, I am her and you must have been shocked to see a mak cik who claimed to be her..hehehe! Anyway, we used to meet on the number seven too, didnt we? I am happy to share my experience and by blogging about it, I am documenting and reliving those moments. Mustdo it before the brain cells go, kan?

Kak Teh said...

Wonda, you have had your fair share of illnesses but you persevered. I am embarassed to say that i am not that resilient. Mee bandung has nothing comparedto this story. All the best to you Wonda and God bless. Everytime I pick up my handphone, there's something to remember you by.

abang malaya, you say the sweetest thing and i am truly touched. But i am sure you have seen the other side of me too - especially when the gang of three - fati, ena and I - were together. We can cause quite a riot. Thank you and if only i can say thank you personally. God bless.

Kak Elle, yes, isnt it a wonderful world, eh?

Kak Teh,
You write so very well. I wish I could pen down my thoughts the way you did yours. But of course, you're a season and well known journalist and I, just a novice (or not even near there yet)! But I shall perserve as how Alice had. Yes, Alice, you should have named your blog "WondaWoman"! Oops, Kak Teh, minta maaf, forgot to minta keizinan untuk lalu sikit! Thanks.

Kak Teh, not only are you celebrating the anniversary of your blogsphere but Dec 06 also mean that you've stayed in London for 27 years! Gee...

I suppose Taufiq will be the one cooking upon his return! He'll do the lemang and you do the rendang. Oh, but how do you bakar your lemang over there? Lemang and rendang and the kerisik, mmmm...my favourite. I always get them from Pak Ali in Ampang. His lemang is the best so far. Aiyoh Kak Teh, I think I'm off track aledi.

Ilene, its not the way i write, its the way people inspire me to write!
yes, i told Taufiq that he is to do the cooking when he comes back. Today he sms'ed saying he is making lemang, rendang and dodol. Dodol??? Our lemang here is simple - not thatIhave attempted it myself. We use foil and fill it with pulut and roll it, babey!

Ely, hehehe - sorry, I know, I know! I remember those days helping people set up their blogs and then laterwith Maknenek we went around putting up banners designed by maknenek. It was fun!

I take this opportunity to wish you and all at home a very Happy New Year. All my best regards.
Oh yes, reading your beautiful post re friendship, promts me to add my 3 cents here: "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you".
You have a nice day, Kak Teh. UL.

I don't see it as a defeat. there is still hope. we never know. miracles do happened everyday as what cheau s ching wrote in her column ( The STAR sunday).

Ena dan siti macam mana nak lupa
Gelak ketawa macam dunia mereka yang empunya
Rose Ismail apa kurangnya
They were the soul of Balai Berita.

Self confidence janganlah dikira
Sampai yang jantan pun rasa tak selesa
Tapi Abang Malaya ok dengan mereka
Sampai terbit macam-macam cerita.

Tapi itu cerita lama
Balai Berita kini dah tak sama
Nak cakap pun takut-takut
Sebab ramai informer dan tali barut
Pandang dulu kanan dan kiri
Sebab ramai nak ampu Dato' Kalli.

Muka macam Abang Malaya tak laku lagi
Mereka dah meluat mereka dah benci
Kini Abang Malaya ke Balai berita setahun sekali
Sekadar hadir mesyuarat agung kompeni
Dapat dividen macam tahi gigi
Cukup bayar secawan kopi.

Minta maaf Abang Malaya nostalgia
Ingat kisah lama buat hati duka nestapa
Apa yang kita bina dah runtuh semua
Sebab legasi peninggalan dikata tak berguna.

Salam kasih kepada semua
Abang Malaya berhenti seketika
Ada waktu kita berjumpa
Berceloteh bercerita menghibur duka.

nostalgia mengusik di hati kita,
masa yang lampau seronok dubuka
tapi yang manis dah jadi cuka
keadaan berubah apakan daya.

ingat kak teh hilai ketawa
buat mengubat hati yang lara
kekadang menelefon sikawan lama
mengeluh menangis sambil ketawa.

tak apalah abang janganlah hampa,
nak buat macam mana ini masa depa,
kak teh balik pun depa tak kenal sapa,
semuanya baru dan muda belaka.

Hi Kak Teh,

Happy blog-versary (is there such a word?)

But this entry..Duh..

What a sad sad sad entry...

Your sweet narration on Wonda, your anonymous friend and Dr Bubbles, is so inspiring. Really it is.

But, Shazwan..oh this one, teramat sedeh. Sedeh takde kata. But definitely you and gang have done your best. May God protect him, insy.

I do agree with the rest, that you are a talented write and alhamdulillah you have made good use of this talent to help others. Keep it up, sweetheart.

tokasid said...

Thank you kak teh for this entry.

another fabulous post kak teh!

it's amazing how we can all connect in cyberspace and develop friendships all over the world. It doesn't ever matter in which age group we all are because this is the type of friendship that transcends all boundaries.

reminds me of one scene in An American Tail when the little mouse who got separated from his family looked at the moon and his mom was doing the same thing elsewhere and they were singing somewhere over the rainbow... and the line goes something like this, "if you miss me, just look at the moon, coz I'll be looking at the same moon wherever I am, and we'll be together"

Now applying that here, we can all be thousands of miles apart but we'll always be together if we read kakteh's blog.... hehehe...

Taufiq dah boleh sepeaking nogori. Lepaih ni boleh sepeaking Melake.
Harap2 jangan orang Jasin ajaq dia "lahabau kau" sudah. Tapi tak taulah kalau orang Jasin 'close one-eye' mcm MP depa tak tau lah.

Secara generalnya Melaka ni nice place to stay. Kebanyakan orang Melake very tolerant dgn orang luar, (well cek dah dok sini 17 tahun ). Jasin is nice.Mcm Rombau.Very kampung. Lots of kebun getah and sawit. Lots of kampong berdusun macam di Kedah. dan seperti tempat2 lain di Tanah Melayu ni makin ramai Mat Rempit.

Taufiq will definitely enjoy Melake. tapi not sure boleh enjoy Cincalok or not.

Yg special Jasin compared daerah lain di melake is bila breakfast( at least di kedai and warong2) depa dah pekena nasi berlauk!
Nasi lemak roti canai tak berapa famous waktu pagi.

jgn bila balik London taufiq suruh kak teh masak nasik berlauk utk sarapan sudah la..
