Remembering Pak

The aroma of the curve cut tobacco, war time stories, tokohoon plasters and fighting over newspapers to do crossword puzzles always remind me of Pak. A kind, generous man until he died. Today I remember Pak and I remember the song Sri Mersing that he wanted us to buy from the record shop down the road, but we never did.
Here, Kak Teh remembers Pak.

same here Danial. My father used to dab perfume on his hanky. You know, I brought with me a small piece of his blanket. It used to smell of his tobacco.

Salam Kak Teh,

Bertanya saya, tahun bila Pak meninggal? Mine, 31st July 1990. Semoga ALlah sentiasa merahmati both yours and mine and others.

I envisioned (actually preparing my ears for) the 'yesteryears' version of Seri Mersing. Cover version Siti sedap tapi macam tak ngamlah Kak Teh.

Satu lagi, Kak Teh dah cari/dengar Zapin yang tinggal oleh Ramlah Ram?Take a listen.

Hanya kenangan yang akan terus menemani yang ditinggalkan.

Kak Teh: Your dad sounds like my grandfather -- with his tobacco and his war stories. I love saddling against my grandfather to catch a whiff of his tobacco so much that when he died, my grandmother let me have his pipe!!

ilene, thanks. Yes, he loved Seri Mersing - but the old version.

OSH, terima kasih.

mekyam, the sengau had its use. some people said that it gave the needed effect for this piece.

Deli, Pak meninggal tahun 1975 - dah lama dah tapi kak teh masih nampak lagi saat pemergian dia sebab kami semua di sisi dia. Kak teh tak pernah dengar Ramlah Ram dan dah lupa siapa original singer Sri mersing - must google!

This is so vivid the way you are describing your Pak. I could almost see him mingling with the Japs, and the satisfied looks on their face upon listening to your Pak's violin play.

Thanks Kak Teh for sharing.

Kak teh,
I was touched.
Why is it that when they were gone that we only realized the many things we should have done for our parents? I wish to kick myself for missing out on the manay things I didn't do for them.

What a sweet remembrance. Be it by a song or a scent or a simple story, those whom we love the most come back to us in our daily lives in amazing ways. And they live on through us, do they not? :)

Sob Sob. Mostly those who has lost a father can relate to this. I miss my Abah too. He likes P Ramlee songs and the Nogori songs.

Kak Teh,
I have been following your blog and that of Awang Goneng too. It has been interesting to read them.Your story on your Pak makes me remember my late Abah who passed away on 8th.March 2000 the date that I can't forget . I reckon my Abah has the same characters as your Pak too . I regretted too that I couldn't do the things that I should have done for him. Any way let us pray so that they rest in peace and be among the faithfulls in Heaven.
