****I am having so much fun reading all your contributions! Thank you! Still too busy to update but not too busy to read your comments and contributions to list of names parents give their children.*****
So, we now know why Nicole Kidman named her baby Sunday Rose - her father was inspired by artist Sidney Nolan's muse Sunday Reed. So, no more speculations or jokes about it, OK? Well, not until she goes to school and starts having to fill in forms and what nots. Can you imagine telling people, Hi, I am Sunday Rose.
Anyway, this name reminds me of a friend who is no longer with us. We were in the office one afternoon when I heard him arguing with someone on the phone.
He received a call from someone who said he was Rabu. I then heard him say "I am Khamis" as he was indeed Khamis Ahmad, a Berita Harian journalist based in Penang. Rabu apparently thought that Khamis was pulling his leg and was slighted. So, that is just one problem Sunday might encounter.
Do parents really think when they name their children? A neighbour decided to name her son Sirhan after the assasinator and a cousin named his child Hospi because that's his only child born in the hospital.
Well, another one before I go back to my work.
Was telling someone about how in Terengganuspeak, words ending with n, are always pronounced with ng - as in makang, ikang, etc. Apparently the sultans of both Terenggangu and Kedah (this is a long time ago) had a bet and the one who loses will lose the G. Kedah lost and thus we have kucin, anjin, kunin, etc.
But this friend narrated another hilarious story about how the Portuguese changed their mind about conquering Kedah. After they had taken over Malacca, they set their sights on Kedah and sent several spies to do some intelligence work. The report they received wasn't very good.
"It was easy to take over Malacca. They had only Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir Hang Lekiu and Hang Kasturi. In Kedah, they have thousands of Hangs!!
Hang Loklak, Hang Bodoh, Hang Samseng, Hang Tak Senonoh...etc!
OK, OK! I promise to come back with a more serious story soon!

"Khalisa Anggun Masmerah, nama mu buat aku berasa gundah", kata Pak Malim sambil memakai purdah.
kak teh dear,
Thanks for making my day! *LOL* Love this posting.
err... those Hangs re Kedah, i think they still exist now, but scattered all around msia. I hope these people grow up soon!
Pak Malim,
Orang sekarang pilih nama glamour,
kata kucing kak teh yang macam MCHammer!
ms istanabul,
this is a mere attempt to update blog . Am still so so so busy - but will certainly want to meet up before you go.
Ya, lots of Hangs from Kedah everywhere in this world. In my own household, my father would forbid us to use aku and hang.
When I first graduated back during the 87 recession, before I managed to get myself a permanent job, I used to work as casual staff at MIDFCCS - handling share applications. Came across the name "Sampul bin Surat" on one of the sampul surat received... (I am not kidding!)
Pi, Bani, really?? This is like the Javanese postman - Suratman and the Sikh postmaster - Surat Singh!
Thanks for sharing.
hehehe..memang silly!
Ada kawan nama dia start dengan abang, bila dia angkat telefon dia cakap "abang disini"..jawapan yang biasa dia dapat.."eeiii...gatalllll"
Salam Kak Teh,
At least, it is a thousand times better than reading all the rubbish we have in the mainstream newspaper.
Dr Bubbles, indeed silly but I think we need a break from all the serious things that's happening around us, dont u think?
sarahjiha, hehe - I would react the same should some one just come up to me and ask me to call him abang -
Thanks for sharing.
zabs, my sentiments exactly- thus the topic. Things are getting a bit heavy, betul tak? And getting out of control. Malulah.
Hee.. hee.. very funny!! Esp. the "Sampul bin Surat" from Pi Bani!
mrs nordin - yes, that sure is funny. I wonder how he went through life - must be the butt of jokes everywhere. Mana sampul?
HAHAHAHA!!! So kelakar!!!
Thanks for sharing, K. Teh :)
And I've heard names like Atur a/k Tujuh Lapis, Kerinting, and Pisang Kompot...
Serious!
The best one is pisang Awak - a kind of pisang that Kedahans call- I went to this mamak shop and said ' mamak pisang awak ada ke' - the mamak gave me a synical dirty look!! He he!!
hahahhahahahahaha this is so lawak lah kak teh..hhahaa...ut lah kan, sometimes parents ni bukan fikir betul2 pun bila nak bagi nama anak...orang dulu2 tu lain cerita lah kan...
yatie
anon, hahaha! I can totally understand why the mamak gave you a dirty look.
yatie, orang dulu-dulu nak namakan anak tengok dalam Quran, ikut nama orang2 yang baik dan soleh.
Kak teh rasa kalau nama bunga pun cantik juga, macam orang dulu2 - cempaka, anggrek, melati....
Salam Kak Teh,
In the 80's when I was interviewing students for scholarship, there was a student from Sabah whose name was Bangku Bin Meja! All 3 of us who were in the interview board could not stop giggling and decided to award the scholarship to the guy.
I wonder where he is now. (you think I should google him up)?
ntah diaorg nih... suka-suka ati je bagi nama anak. Ari tuh, lepas 9/11, ramai pulak bahlul bagi nama anak diaorg Osama. Tak terpikir ke nanti budak tu nak pegi mana-mana susah sbb nama dia cam gitu? Sapa2 yg nama Osman mesti tau kalau diaorg masuk Australia ke, musti kena question kat airport lama giler. I myself have had some problems at some airports because my last name is similar to the last name of a certain tyrant who has since been hanged. Macam la nama tu sorang je ada. Nyampah.
Anyway, those parents who come up with silly names for their kids should be hanged. Kesian budak tu. Kalau zaman dedolu nama Jantan ke, Bulat ke, Kechik, Panjang, or Walad (Arabic for boy) like my grandpa are acceptable. But now, in the era of kids with Melayu proto faces being named Natasya Asparilia or Natalia Qistina or other names yg tergeliat lidah nak sebut, nama2 klasik kampung macam tu means the kids will be tormented for life.
There was this rhythmic gymnast named Faiznur Miskin, and if I'm not mistaken her father's name was Miskin Bin Fakhir.... is that supposed to be reverse psychology or something? Like if u name a kid "Kaya" he will never get rich?
Sori kakteh, panjang plak i membebel..... by the way, that sampul bin surat is indeed funny. I pity the guy.
mama irma, yes, that is what google is for - in fact , yes, I will also google sampul bin surat and bangku bin meja! I dont know how yopu kept a straight face while interviewing him. When he arrived did you show encik bangku ke bangku dia?
Sue, you are hilarious in anger! You make berleter an art to be mastered!
Sirhan must have changed his name by deed poll now.
Ya, some parents do change their children's names to sort of change their luck - thus fakhir bin miskin . I should have asked my parents to change mine too.
and bremember there was a time when children take the name of both parents? that can be a quite tongue twisters too.
Kak Teh, I have come across 'Sarong Bin Lampin' ...kesian, kan? Macam tak percaya...tapi betul, sebab I checked the IC!
ms hart, LOL!!!! This gets better and better! Must google that too and see what has become of Sarong. Was the father from the Lupus clan?
wanshana, how can i miss your list! That's hilarious too. People can be so creative! And you;d think they have nine months to think before they name a child.
i laugh my head off when i read ur N3 LOL.
btw, if you from m'cca u'll heard a person called by name like 'lembik', 'suboh' and all sort of name that will makes u wonder and mouth agape haha.
Halogamora,(what a nice name!) I have heard of Suboh but not lembik - I dont know whether i can handle that without giggling!
I guess the weirder the name the easier people will remember u? Like forever?
Just look at my name. Satu je kat sek rendah, sek menengah, alevel, university, department. But thats because i live in Malaysia and quite a few years in the UK. Very few those with my name. Kalau I kat Egypt, kureng sikit la glamer....
I like this entry. LOL.
It is a trend for celebrities to name their child with unusual name. But I like Apple though..hehe
I pernah process one application from a ROBIN bin HOOD. No joke. I had his IC as proof (then). He lived somewhere in Negeri Sembilan (tak ingat dah daerah mana).
There was also a boy in Sekolah Angkatan Tentera in JB in the 70s called Mohd Tom Dooley. ( there wass a song Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley made famous by the Kingston Trio)
Alinlai, camour kedah punya hang dengan penang's and also Perlis, habis musuh lari!
Chinta, actually, I quite like Peaches. But no Orange or Sour Grapes or Watermelon! I think Malay flowers are nice - Kenanga, Melor, Mawar, kan?
MA,Robin bin Hood!!! LOL! You had me rolling on the floor with this one - sesungguhnya Hairan bin Ajaib!
Kak Teh
I don't know whether you have heard this before. At UEA, I happened to cross path with a couple of girls from Brunei, and asked them:
"Nona-nona nak ke mana?"
One of them answered:
"Mau pergi ambil gambar"
Me, always the kay poh chee, asked quizically:
"Padanlah bergaya. Tapi mana kameranya?"
They giggled uncontrollably, and gave me that oh poor poor boy look. After gaining their composure, one of them had this to say:
"Tak kan tak kenal Gambar, kawan kita yang ambil Ekonomi tu"
THE END
(Readers, make your own grand finale ..)

hehehe and some people say apa ada pada nama? we had one coffee cheung in the organization but not in our sub la. imagine anak tan sri jins shamsuddin when someone calls out his name "errr, encik Putera Hang Jebat!"
Hi Kak Teh@Hang Joker, trust you think of something like this and blog on it!! Totally kelakar.
Kat Bangladesh, the name Bulu seemed to be rather popular. We used to laugh a lot bila nampak Bulu Tower, Bulu Bazaar, Bulu this and Bulu that. Funny pun ya, geli pun ya juga!
But at the end of the day "What is in a name? A rose will still smell the same in another name."
aMiR, your story reminded me of another one...when we were freshies at ITM, we were asked to go around and find a Transport student by the name of Basri bin Jaya....geddit?
mama rock, betul nama dia gitu??? aduuh kesian!
Madan Tai Tai, hahaha - i find that geli!
when I was a broadcaster at the BBC, we used to dread reading news with Benazir Bhutto - you see, people here pronounced it as er...you know.
But we found a way and pronounced as people back home do - Bhatto.
he!he!he!
Hehe, there's always a time to be silly, Kak Teh. Far too much serious news of late... our minds need a breather! ;)
fusarium solano ( kak teh kena tengok dua tiga kali macam mana nak eja ni)
thanks for the visit to my blog.
kenny dear - lately things were becoming too serious verging on the absurdity, dont you think? Can you come up with such story lines? Too many plots and subplots!
Kak Teh,
Pasal beri nama anak kenalah fikir baik-baik.
Isteri saya namanya cukup baik diberi oleh keluarga, ia itu Sayang
Masa muda dan baru kawin panggil iteri sayang oklah, bila tua-tua ni panggil sayang depan khlayak ramai, semua mata pandang kat kita,
Bwgitu juga bila bertengkar suami isteri, marah macamana pun terpaksa juga panggil sayang.
Gang Yan.
Salam Kak Teh,
It’s ok to merapu sometimes just to show that we are normal after all.
Since your seldom merapu it’s good to hear this from you. Take care.
anon ie gang yan,
Kalau nama macam tu memanglah best sebab jadi kesayangan semua orang. Dari mudah sampai ke tua sayang.
Mengenai nama sayang ni, kak teh pun ada satu cerita nak tambah:
Anak saudara kak teh memang mulut dia petah sikit. Dia dengar aunty dia panggil suaminya Yang. Dia kata, apa pasal panggil uncle tu yang? Uncle tu dah old, panggil lah old, old! Bukan yang, yang!
Dato Jaff, sekarang ni terpaksa nak merapu banyak sebab terlalu banyak cerita membingungkan. Hope you and family are well. Recently I found a picture of you when you were here in our living room. Semuanya masih mudah belaka.
Kak Teh,
Can always trust you to make light moments.
Thanks for making my day.
Kak Teh,
Wondering Typhoon Sue involved in national gymnastics. I recalled Faiznur Miskin, one of our national stars. It struck me how self-effacing behind the name.
There was a Datu Tigabelas in Sabah. Forgotten over what his fortune fell.
Hi & Lo, I am drowning under piles of work but once in a while I need to resurface for some fresh air as well as create ome chuckle. Life is so full of not very nice things, dont you think? Did you read about how Britain is going to impose visa on malaysian visitors now? and then on top of it all - currently going on at the Old Bailey is a malaysian girl trued for murder (beheading) of another girl. We certainly make headlines now adays.
I have never heard of Faiznur Miskin, nor Datu Tigabelas. I wonder what goes through the minds of parents when they name their children.
Hope you are well. Was looking for you Hi & Lo!
hej! kak teh...a good posting for a good laugh over the weekend...i like the terengganu & kedah story...:)
hej! kak teh...i used to came across the name like 'kerbau' and 'helikopter' (mostly in sarawak) and not try to make fool but that's make malaysian unique...:)
Kak Teh
I’m imagining this scene at the male hostel in ITM.
Male student: Kau orang buat apa kat sini?
A gaggle of female freshies: Kita orang nak cari Bas Srijaya.
MS: Biar betul. Ni bukan Puduraya tau!
AGoFF: Tapi Prof bilang Bas..ri Bin Ja..ya tinggal di hostel ni.
MS: Errr… kejap saya panggil Mat Transport tu (and quickly made a dash to avoid further embarrassment while AGoFF laughed softly ….)
Over here, our already frail nerves are constantly attacked with jaw dropping headlines from Harian Metro, etc. Oh Bangsaku dan Malaysiaku.

Salam Kak Teh,
you truly made my day. my apologies for not visiting your blog as frequent as I used to. I want to share some funny names too. There was once an article in THE STAR about the 'Way' family. Apparently, the father thought it would be funny to name his 3 sons as Hi Way, See Way and some other way. I cannot really recall. i truly pity the children and this is a true story! I used to know some one in school call Lee Ken Ching. Kesian dia..Anyway, you are right, I try not to read or watch the news anymore. it just makes me sad...thanks for the jokes!
salam kak teh... been a while i know... suddenly lost the ability to use the internet... any way.. lawak...lawak... sampai pecah perghut ni...
ha.. ha.. ha..
Bini saya ada murid bernama "Goh Weng Kit". Saya pula pernah mengajar seorang yang mengejar glamer, lalu ambil nama Kristian, "Easy". Malangnya nama keluarga Easy ialah, "Lay".
Jasmani, Singapura
danial ma, thanks for sharing yours. Am sure there are many more interesting ones,..hehe - let me know.
Yes, the kedah trengganu one is funny - i have forgotten who told me the joke.
aMiR, as freshies we used to fall for a lot of things...kena bully saja. But BasSri bin Jaya tu very common. Am sure a lot of freshies kena.
Our state of affairs - well when is it ever going to end??
Royal, Lee Ken Ching??? Hahaha! I laughed so much...and this reminds me of that joke - about the shops trying to outdo each other. One put up his family name on the board: Ai Kian Fatt. The brother across the road didnt want to be left out and put up one: Ai Kian Too. One other shopkeeper wanted to join in the competition and put up his family name: Soh Kian Wee.
budak kamponggggggg- memang dah lama kak teh tak nampak muka hidung you! Busy ke?
Jasmani, oh no!!! That is so unfortunate - Easy Lay???? Who can blame those who went after her, eh?
Oh, I missed out this one :
One put up his family name on the board: Ai Kian Fatt. The brother across the road didnt want to be left out and put up one: Ai Kian Too. One other shopkeeper wanted to join in the competition and put up his family name: Soh Kian Wee. Another one across the street put up his signboad Soh Huat (?)
"Hi, I'm Sunday Rose. This is my smelly sister, Monday Rafflesia."
Heeeeeeeee. :)
Wow it's been awhile since I left a comment here. But I've subscribed to your stuff, Kak Teh. :)
vern!!! it is 7 in the evening in London and you are not asleep yet? Yes, tell me that you are studying...hehe! Thanks for visiting. Am drowning under piles of work but will be making my rounds soon.
Hey Aunty Teh,
Haha! You know, Nicole's two other kids are Isabella Jane and Connor Anthony...
Why lar 'terpesong' to become Sunday Rose? Although, it is nice, in it's own unique way...
Hey, we have Suri Cruise, which sounds like a sun-worshipper...
We also have Fish Leong...
Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple...
And we have Bruce Willis and Demi Moore who named their girls 'Rumer Glenn', 'Scout Laurie' and 'Talullah Belle'...
And then the crown of it all, the late Michael Hutchens and Paula Yates have 4 girls: Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches Honeyblossom and Little Pixie...
*Smack head*
Poor kids, it's bad enough they will probably never have what we call a 'normal' life since they're forever in the public life...
Oh, by the way, my mum has a pupil called Idi Amin...
PS: Don't ask how come I remember all these names *Lol*
Kak Teh,
Nasib baik anak Nicole Kidman tu is not "Sunday Roast"... :)
Oh ya, nak tambah lagi satu. I'm not sure if this place still exists now, but, years ago there was a factory along jalan nak ke utara (not sure before or after Bukit Mertajam). Nama kilang tu - KILANG TONG TEIK...
Hello, Aunty Z
Interesting Posting. Wonder if you remember Uncle Dorai and Aunty Tata in Malaysia, they were mentioned in your article/post of June 4th 1979 titled "Down Memory Lane". Well U. Dorai wanted to send his regards and say hello.
Funny..
my experience, last year, when I went to a kenduri kahwin in Kota Marudu in Sabah, I pi pasar, and I nampak nama tulis tepi lori kat driver seat pintu, XXX Bin SETAN.. Demi Allah, tak tipu!!!, and one of my student, his father is Teruna Bin Smart.. Everytime the teachers discuss about the name, sure gelak guling2 punya.. talking about names kan...
Kilang Tong Teik????
*gelak guling-guling*
Sunday Rose is not too bad a name actually. Different, but not too weird. Same goes for Apple and Suri. Can't say the same for the Hutchens and Yates clan though. They're too weird!
What about our own local artistes' kids' names?
Hail Amir's daughter- Cintafifi
Uji Rashid's son - Chico
Zami Ismail's son- Mohd Hitler (This guy had since changed his name to Mohd Latiff)
And oh yeah, Jamal Abdillah is one of those idiots who named their kids Osama (Osama Yamani)
By the way, Suri Cruise's name, shouldn't it be Suri Mapother? (Tom Cruise's real name is Thomas Cruiser Mapother III - I'm not even wondering why he didn't use his real name in Hollywood, I mean Mapother??? Not really a heart-throb material izzit?)
Daphne dear - where are u now?
Celebrities tend to have strange ideas when naming their children - who was it who had India?
But Idi Amin????
Wanshana, Sunday Roast came to mind when I read that. Hey, lets have Sunday Roast! - that will be the joke.
Yes, Tong Teik takes the biscuit. That's so funny.
diaana, thanks for visiting. How did you find this blog? And is Uncle Dorai and Aunty Tata okay?? Id love to meet up with them again - do send them my love. I remember Sunny Boy.
Are you their daughter?
Oya - Setan? Oh no!! and I wonder how Teruna bin Smart looked like. It must be really hard on him trying to live up to his name.
Sue, seriously? Osama??? Greatm we've got mohd Hitler, Sirhan, and Idi AMin. That shd be enought o form an alternative govt. - A formidable one.
Kak Teh,
Your charm is very infectious. No matter how busy, you always find time for people.
Read a true story in Readers Digest abt an American farmer.
He developed a seed resistant to a pest that was besetting farms across the country.
The best thing was not his breakthrough but in in unselfish attitude.
He gave away his seeds to all the farms in the neighbourhood.
That year he won the Farmer of the year award. After the citation was read, he was asked why he gave away his seeds.
In his own words, "I cannot stop the wind from blowing from the neighbours into my field. Their pollens would contaminate my crops."
I recall this when I came across a book, "Assault on reasons" by Al Gore. It started me to think being unselfish is a reasonable thing.
awwwww Hi & Lo, you are so sweet. and so unselfish in sharing your wise words.
Yes, i have ben busy - and mostly in front of laptop, which is why I can keep track of comments but there's so many to blog about BUT no time.
People have been so kind in sharing their stories as well.
Thank you all. Keep them coming.
Kak Teh,
After returning from my "missing in action", I had a good laugh "hang"ing around your posts!
Tumpang lalu Kak Teh,
Hi&Lo, remember the "wake up and smell the coffee" comment you made long ago after reading the travel story on Bukit Dumbar? Somebody by the name of "Sarah Mori" would like to thank you for the encouragement you gave her.
ken, I know who you are and I hope you are having a lovely time ' missing in action'. I know sarah mori too - send her my regards.
chet, i published your comment about whose name and husni - but I dont know where it went? But thanks for your contribution. Some glitch some where!
Kak Teh,
Minta tumpang lalu to Ken. I am really flattered you remember me. Oh, yes, I remember the Bt Dumbar story. It meant a lot to me cos Bt Dumbar held bitter-sweet memories for me. Have not visited Mori's blog for long while. Will do so as soon as time permits.
Kak Teh, if I may brag, I was very happy helping someone last week.
She was charged in court last year for putting up a banner contravening the pharma act cos it claimed to cure cancer.
She approached a lawyer who was also a BN candidate in last election. This lawyer advised her to plead not guilty.
On Monday, the case came up for hearing. But the lawyer abandoned her. She approached me for help. It was her decision to plead guilty.
She asked if I could draft a mitigation plea for her.
The judge fined her RM1,500 which the prosecution was shocked cos the usual penalty was RM3,000.
Kak Teh - Thanks for letting me know. I was wondering if I'd posted the comment under a different blog entry, or whether I only previewed the comment and forgot to press the post button! I'm having more and more senior moments recently.
hi & lo, that was very kind of you. It is not easy to write out a mitigation that would move the judge - especially to half the fine. I am sure the person is most indebted to you. A little kindness goes a long way, kan?
chet - I like that - senior moments. At first I read it as senile moments - which, I think is very similar!! I have loads of those senior/senile moments - sigh! You are too young to have them.
Kak Teh,
I shld'nt be bragging. The judge was sympathetic to this friend and I was merely a humble vessel answering a distress call.
I merely outlined the background of this person who was only a provision shop operator and unwittingly put up the banner by a direct selling co. (Anyone not in the pharma trade won't be aware of this law regarding medical claims.)
Actually this offence is very serious cos it's misleading to the vulnerable audience.
In fact the Star was once fined RM600k for a Follow Me shampoo with the claim that it could cure dandruff. At best it may prevent the condition.
Anway the Min of Health should come down hard on direct selling firms preying on the unsuspecting public.
Kak Teh,
Apa ada pada nama? Parent bagi nama pada anak mereka yang belum tahu apa apa, apabila besar nanti ada yang tak suka pada nama mereka tetapi itu lah nama mereka.
Salam daripada Gunung Kinabalu.
Thanks for visiting Aki Momogun.
Kak Teh - That's a funny tale about the Portuguese. I don't think I can use it though in my book!
Kak Teh,
Not so long ago I was involved in a privatisation project which included the taking over of 1000++ govt staff, including some 300++ from Sabah & Sarawak. Here are some REAL names from the payroll register that I cannot forget till today:
1. Sawi anak Kangkung
2. Senapang anak Helikopter
3. Hitam bin Putih
4. Harimau anak Belang
5. Laila binti Majnun
I used to say to those who were pregnant, if they ran out of choice of names for their babies, heck, just take a peek at the roll call list. Hahaha.....
berkenaan faiznur, the gymnast, we were friends back in lower secondary. her mom was my BM teacher. we were told to address our teacher as Puan Miskin. Au contraire, she's far from miskin, i tell yeww. She's very trendy and very definitely upper crust. .
Arwah mak was telling me that there was one veteran RTM newsreader who used to call people "butter crumpets". I have this nasty habit of calling people "mangkuk" when I am upset.Macam-macam.
i have come across the name "Tong Sam Pah" painted on the door of a pick up truck somewhere in negeri sembilan many years ago.
and recently, on Lestary:Sindarela, a tv3 drama series in which Amani stars, the bodyguard of the princely character is named "Kuntum".
nak kesian ke tak?
on a more personal note, my son Arzachel has obtained a new monicker, sebab tergeliat lidah orang nak sebut. so he's now Muhammad. mudah-mudahan berkat la eh?
imagine how a certain Xaphyr Alden Azwin would fit in a bekwoh congregation?
i thank my parents for my nice name, but they could have shortened it a tad bit. susah nak isi borang.
salam ziarah from dublin.. :)
Kak Teh,
Nice to know Nazrah a classmate of Faiznur. One ex-national gymnast went on to become an orthopaedic surgeon. Wonder if it was her?
I had always been curious why gymnasts tend to excel in their studies.
One day I had an encounter with a state coach. He brightened up when I popped the question.
He explained gymnasts experienced physics during the training whilst students only could learn from the textbook.
Hi Kak Teh, sorry haven't been here for quite some time. This is off-topic but I find it hard to read your blog with the brown background. I understand the reason behind the colour but it's so difficult to read la. My poor eyes are strained enough as it is.
LoL ;).
Thanks Kak Teh for cheering up my day!
hi&lo:
we weren't classmates but she was in the class next to mine. i remember her as being studious and excellent in her studies.when we were gabbing on the latest gossips, she would be studying lab reports, imagine that!
i have since lost contact with both miss and mrs miskin.
hi kak teh...kak puteh? yeah..u r indeed fair, kannnn...
anyway, talking bout names, i had difficult time to find a name for my kids....then decided, they have to carry good names..good meaning..yelah, kata orang, cakap dan panggilan ni pun doa....kalau letak nama yang maksud dia baik, selalu panggil nama tu, insyaAllah baik jadinya mereka...so, my husband n i decided, kalau anak pempuan, kena ada nama nurul, meaning cahaya..supaya hidupnya disinari cahaya dan kewujudannya di muka bumi pinjaman Tuhan ini memberi cahaya kepada yang lain juga....but then, being a modern mum (modern ke? well, ast least a mum in a modern era), mana cukup satu perkataan je kan...so, we came up with nama tengah dan later nak ada nama blakang jugak, kononnya family name...so later, bila anak ni ada anak2, they will give the family name to their sons n daughters as well...so, irfan was chosen....
my eldest daughter - Nurul Liana Irfan and the youngest one, Nurul Hana Irfan. Liana means kelembutan, kesopanan, Hana means cerdik, wise n irfan, cerdik.
Now, bila anak2 dah sekolah dah besar, they always come to me and complaint (sort of), mama, kawan2 kitorang panggil nama macam2 la...nurul, liana, nana, irfan and latest fun....(fan)..and the youngest one, nama punyalah panjang...akhirnya panggil baby je...emmmmmm
'Sunday Rose' lebih kurang sama bunyi dengan 'Sunday Roast'!!! he he he
Kesian budak tu.
Question: 'What are having for lunch today?'
Answer:'Sunday Roast'!!!
Hi & Lo, the first thing I learnt during court reporting is that, ignorance is no excuse in law..no matter how small, but there's no harm in appealing. You must know quite a lot to be able to help her.
This story reminds me of our local Chinese store here - he has every chinese medication, claiming to cure everything - my husband pointed put to the owner who comes from Ipoh, that one day, someone is goingto come after him.
jbingkasan, thanks for the visit - long time no see. When are you coming to london again?
Tunku, yes, the Portuguese story is hilarious - I think we should do an alternative history of Malaya.
Ibu oh Ibu, I am trying so hard not to laugh!!!!

Kak Teh,
I know you love chocolates. How about white chocolate icing on the dark chocolates for easier reading? I am worse than you. With my limited technical knowledge, I dare not change my header in case everything "whites out"!
ASSALAMUALAIKUM n ALHAMDULLILAH
MADAM KT:
I thought of naming my (whenever the time comes) child BAYAM or TERUNG or SAWI is a silly idea...
Hmmm...this comes for a rethink.

THE CHILD AND THE SEA
-o0o-
what a lovely sight is the raging sea,
to the child that sleeps within me,
a war of winds and water that is salty,
that brings calm to where draughts was once mighty,
oblivious to the sleeping child in me,
to the sad stories behind a seaman trophies,
as all to him are marks of glory,
to a dead hero who fought with no worries.

LOLLL...hahahaha...tq for the post. Cheered me up. Tq for your prayers for my fren.
True enuf, names can bring u down. An ex-student of mine either purposely omit mentioning her father's name or say it very quickly and inaudibly. Understandably why. Perhaps having learned from previous experiences, she develops inferiority complex to mention tht she's BT SAMPUL. Classmates can be cruel. But I think parents can be more cruel if they don't think of the implication of the chosen names. It's a lifetime label of curse & torture.
Parents and teachers should make the children feel proud of their names.
Kak Teh,
Kat opis su je ada nama Apple, Cherrie dan Mango. Nama buah.
Sekarang ni trend nama panjang+pelik+susah nak eja+sebut. Ngapa ada ibubapa yang suka buat camtu erk?

Suara, apple, cherry and mango? Wow, we can have a picnic basket. But fruity names are nice. But I really dont know about fruit names in Malay. I dont want to be called Pisang or Rambutan or Langsat. Do you?

A nine year-old NZ girl has been made a ward of the court so she can change her name from Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii to something less embarrassing
erkk.... :)
Ms Cloudy, thanks for that - I wonder how she filled up her forms before she changed her name!! What on earth possessed her parents to come up with that name..
What about naughty names of places .. Batang Berjuntai, Scunthorpe .. Whoops let's not get carried away although there are many more ...

There's one joke in Kedah - Orang mati Langgar bas Pokok Sena tanam di Kubur Panjang. Not naughty but funny. I think Perak has more.
