The weird wide world of Kak Teh

I have been pronounced mad many times. Once, it was because I refused to join in the crowd and buy Royal Doultons and Queen Anne trays and accessories that people have gleaming on their dinning table. “You giler ke tak mau beli Queen Anne?”said the lady whose marketing tactics left a lot to be desired. For one last aggresive marketing push she bellowed; “Semua bini diplomat beli Queen Anne daripada I”. That did it – I refused to join in and be one. I will continue to serve in my Royal Plastic and Queen Takeaway containers. Thank you.

The second time was when at a very late age in life, I decided to do my MA – not just one pronouncement of my mental state – but a chorus of “You giler ke?” still ringing in my ears and these from people I call friends. And I still love them. And I better add this one for the glam factor. When a close friend invited Sharifah Aini to her house, I said "Shall we have a karaoke session then? " And guess what they said? Yes, you’ve guessed it.

Anyway, that’s just the mukadimmah to this week’s entry. So, officially I am mad. And now I am risking my reputation further by telling you six weird things about Kak Teh. I have been tagged by Ruby Ahmad but I begged her to let me delay the entry before I lose anymore readers on account of my mental state. So this is the rule:

RULES: People who are tagged should write a blog post of 6 weird things about them as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says 'you are tagged' in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

Weird factor 1: I am a creature of habit. The avatar that I use in this blog- the cheerful redhead – is one that I have been using since I started roaming cyberworld. It was given to me by a dear friend who thought that that avatar suits my personality – whatever that means. And I have since refused to change and continue to let people think that I am young, cheerful and a rehead!
Everytime I take the train, I will only buy coffee and two mushroom croissants, which I will only eat one. For train journeys, it has to be mushroom croissants. Just like Mak in those days, for train journeys, it was boiled eggs and nasi lemak and ayam goreng.

Another bad habit of mine is year after year, come Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Christmas and whatever, I will always buy a brand new pack of greeting cards. With good intentions too. Sometimes, these cards will remain on the shelves to gather dust or sometimes when I feel the urge, I’d write in the cards, put the address and stamps on the envelopes and post them in the drawer. It is the niat, you see. There’s proof of intention, and that’s what matters.

Weird factor 2: I do not know my left from my right thus my driving examiner failed me for the sake of the safety of other roadusers. How considerate. It has long been a standing joke among friends, foe and children that whenever I say turn left, just turn right. Once I was walking with my husband and when we reached a small junction, he said; here we turn right. And there we parted company.

Weird factor 3: I have a bad case of spoonerism. And this serious condition worsens in the company of certain likeminded friends and fellow sufferers such as ena samad and fati. How we understand each other – only God knows. And we have been friends for a long time. I was with Fati going to an assignment. We jumped into a taxi and I said – “Pak Cik, Jubang Saya Please”. I know it sounds crude but I can promise you I didn’t mean it.

During our goodnight session in the dorm, it’d go like this:

Ina: GoodniteMia.
Mia: Goodnite Riza.
Riza: Goodnite Fati
Fati: Goodnite Kak teh
Kak Teh: Goodni tinite.

And we’d all go to sleep with the understanding that I had said: Goodnight Tini.

And did you know that my favourite actor is Harifon Sord? And that I have a friend who used to work in Shongkong Hai Hai Bank? And my shoemaker friend is Chimmy Joo? How I get to be a broadcaster is also a mystery. During the height of the Salman Rushdie’s saga, I had to practice very hard and breathe in and out several times in case I said Rahman Shurdi. And the list goes on. I have written a letter of explanation about this matter to Ms Blarabella. So read here.

Weird factor 4: As if suffering from spoonerism is not enough, I have also been afflicted with something called malapropism. I take astroids for my hayfever, we drove the children in our MP3 while our children listened to music on their MPV. But this is not as bad as my husband, who declared openly in public that we used Durex plates for dinner. What he earnestly meant was Duralex. When he saw me turning red, he profusedly apologised and said that that was the reason we have so many children, we didn’t know which was which. And certainly not as bad as Jade Goody of Celebrity Big Brother who declared she was made an escape goat in the spat with Shilpa Shetty.

Weird factor 5: I have an ongoing war with new technology. I have had arguments with answering machines, ATM’s and even the defenceless photocopier at the office. I am what you might call technically challenged. Perhaps this is because I can’t read instructions or maps. Read here.

Weird factor 6: I cried when I watched Little House on the Prairies, Extreme MakeOvers, Miss Saigon (five times!) and even Lassie.

Now, do I have any readers left?

I hereby tag ena samad, mak andeh, firehorse, x matters, wonda and theta.

KTeh..

It's soo interesting that you have spoonerism. And you're a broadcaster!!

It says that you can be whatever you want to be, just put your mind to it.

Kak Teh,

You are like a box of chocolates - full of surprises. Agreed with "k.d." With your spoonerism, you went on to become a broadcaster.

Because of my spoonerism, I dare not speak cantonese. Tho I may know the word, I cannot get the intonation right.

Crab, shoe are "hai". But mistake in the sound means something vulgar.

I was once described as "pa chau" by an Ipoh friend. Bewildered I asked her when did I ever beat the grass (as "pa chau" in hokkien).

Mentioned in Ruby Ahmad's blog that I would share an anecdote of my gf dumping me for your blog.

My ex thought she was the best cook in the world. Every dish, she claimed was her secret recipe.

Naturally, my expectation was very high, initially. Subsequently, her loving care motivated me to oblige.

But it was a real torture, worst than taking medicine. As an eg, her curry was so watery, it was like pouring water on my rice.

So I started lying to her I had already eaten with friends.

Finally, she caught me many times having dinner by myself and blew her top.

Her mom tried to ask me to sweet-talk her. She said dog good at looking after chicken. Well, she was born in the year of the dog while I am a rooster.

I told her mom sooner or later the dog would chase away the chicken. :)

So that was my last affair with a woman.

Oh Kak Teh, for a change your blog entry here is littered with toilet parts. It is oh-so-hilarious and hugely entertaining. While on the subject of toilet parts, why do arty people in Malaysia used terms such as cerpenis and peliriat when they are talking about short story writers and playwright?

number 1--I am so jealous you got to see Miss Saigon. FIVE times.

number 2--spoonerism which gets the trophy (for me) came from my dear friend Yoke Chin's husband. Who, during Christmas dinner last year, when I commented that Yoke Chin's cake looks like it went through some 911 treatment, announced loud and clear in front of his parents and uncle/auntie that his wife managed to save the cake using some "re-ERECTION" techniques (instead of resurrection techniques). Needless to say, I blushed the reddest red I have ever blushed and walked away from thet able, guwaffing behind the couch!!! hahahaha

Kak Teh,
An interesting account of your weird things. Ah, spoonerim and malapropism - we have something in common, don't we?
An honor to be tagged by you. Dutifully done it though not as interesting as yours.

ruby ahmad said...

Hi Kak Teh,

Words can't describe (tiada kata) how glad I am to have tagged you!!

As I read I felt I was transported to a cinema and I was watching a fabulously entertaining comedy acted by a female version of Robin Williams, Jim Carrey or Steve Martin. Yeah! That hilarious and that good.

Your traits, well, weird as you have classified them, became even more captivating and endearing with the way you have lovingly spun them for us all.

I can identify with a couple of your 'weird' traits..ha ha. Love your spoonerism..bet it is endearing for AG and perhaps some friends. Gosh! 'Harifon Sord'..oh donch let him hear that!
Yeah! Astroid, MP3..I laugh but perhaps at self too. (Gosh! AG's durex..hmm..him too? Funny.) And this one is so cute...'here we turn right. And there we parted company'.

Oh note to self: Don't pick any more items that made me laugh or I will re-write what Kak Teh has written! Ha ha.

Kak Teh, what an entertainment this entry indeed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being kind and such a sport and making the special time, even in your hectic schedule. Mwah!

Tumpang lalu Kak Teh: Oh Hi&Lo, thank you for the story that you promised us about your gf. Duh! What can I say? I simply wish I was a Fairy Godmother and could make it better for you...but from the way you sound you are so ok and that is why you shared the episode with us. I saw your gf tried to please you but it did not work with you. Some oversight. Sad, as how Kak Teh has put it but everyone I believe has a chance to your dreams no matter what and when. It will arrive. Hang in there and continue to hope and wish always for those dreams and lookout for them. Thanks again Hi&Lo for the sharing.

Yeah! Secret Recipe..amazing coincidence isn't it, Hi&Lo?

Thanks Kak Teh for this huge space, I 've taken.

Kak Teh
Blue literature? Oh you just egged me on. Let me share with your game readers one of the weird things I've said. It's blue, I must warn, so skip to the next commentor or else you may pengsan ternganga, like my friends did. It was in the late 80s - my carefree years. I was having lunch with my officemates in one of the eateries in Damansara Heights. Over lunch, we enjoyed gossiping about who is having affair with whom, and someone asked me excitedly: Which Ahmad? (not his real name!, needless to say) We have a few Ahmads in Shell (real name of course!)? Well, I am an exacting and precise sort of person and so I described Ahmad in a no-two-way about-it so that they know exactly who I was refering to. I said matter-of-factly "The one with pubic hair on his head". They were shock-horror. And a moment of pin-drop silence ensued.

ailin, aiyo dont be jealous. I saw ms saigon 5 times, Bombay dreams three times, mama mia - 3 times. If that is not weird, i dont know what is.

wonda, we have a lot in common! and take a rest from blogging, dont close it. I cant comment in yr blog. dont know why but will try again later.

ruby, this is all yr fault - now i am officially weird. now that you mentioned secret recipe, I must now add that every time i went back, I would insist on buying cakes from victoria secret!

Kak Teh said...

mama rock, hehe ! now they think you are weird!

ahni, anak perempuan you mungkin ada keturunan kak teh kut!

a malaysian in riyadh, I am now convinced you must open a blog! so many interesting things to tell! hehe, did your friend , this ahmad, go to a pubic school? heheeh! (this is kak teh getting way out of control!)

aiyaaaa fabmama! you really teruk one. You cant even find yr own blog! Your weird stuff can fill up a whole book...and i know most of them. Remember the jig/dance you used to do when you want to go to the toilet? hahahaha! can still picture that! hehehe - and remember what we said to that guy who sang in the lift? u used to have such sharp lines! Luckily he is still a friend.

Anonymous said...

Kak Teh, you're so original and cheeky. I must confess, the hair on the head remark was first coined by a famous (or rather infamous) person and I just used his to perfection. I should also add, after the pin-drop silence we all burst into huge laughters, especially the ladies. Oh I haven't told you about my weird brief encounter with a pope/father/priest in the Wakitan TC (oops I mean Vatican City) who invited me to his palazzo. That can wait. I've re-read your Love in the Autumn Years and don't you think AG deserves the jolokan lelaki melayu terakhir. People like him is a rare and dying breed now. I wish I can be like him. Has he reveal his weird traits yet to all and sundy?

A Malaysian in riyadh,

AG - lelaki melayu terakhir??? oh noooo! I dont know whether he wants to play the game..but I will reveal one weird thing: for every ills and pains - take Vitamin C! and psssT1 I saw him walking all weird and strange once and he whispered - he had worn one shoe with lace and one slip ons! how he managed that I dont know. But I guess we are well suited to each other.

The only bit of spoonerism I remember is saying "Waye Fong" when I meant "Faye Wong" but I'm sure there were much worse ones. Now I wish I had catalogued them...

And doing an MA at a later stage in life is not crazy, it's only sanity to do what you love! :)

P.S. I've added you to my blog's Bookmarks page - hope that's okay, ya?

I bought a lot of Queen Anne dulu masa study kat UK (1993). Never get to use them. Lepas kawin kami berhijrah ke US. Tinggal semua harta benda tu semua berkarat kat M'sia. Now dah tak tau nak buat apa dgn benda tu semua (dah hilang minat). What's your suggestion?

Anonymous said...

Kak Teh, you are soo.. funny. I remembered the red head woman avatar very well in Rantauan. And oh Kak Teh, I think my hubby have spoonerism too. A very serious one! Once he offered my parents," Mak, bapak...saya ada beli kuih Gendang kasturuk!" much to the astonishment of everyone around when he actually meant Gendang Kasturi. He ever ordered "French caps" when he actually meant French Fries". He did not realised that he said the wrong thing until the crew at McD looked stunned and gave him a funny look. And there was once a KFC crew asked him, "What would you like for chicken? Original or spicy?" and guessed what he answered innocently? "Photostat!"
