...or The Art of Waking People Up For Sahur.
In my recurring dreams, especially during this time of the year, I sit salivating before the biggest bowl of the most yumilicious bubur lambuk any mosque can offer. There are generous helpings of lamb pieces with prawns and a sprinkling of celery and crisp fried shallots floating on melting ghee. As soon as the sound of the canons fired from the state mosque is heard, and ignoring any etiquette for berbuka puasa, I’d plunge my spoon into the bowl which had been sitting there tantalising me for the past half an hour. As soon as the rich, creamy taste of the gastronomic delight hit my tastebuds, the dream turns into a nightmare. It leaves a salty, very salty taste in the mouth. At other times, it is a taste not unlike that of raw badly produced belacan, that goes drip, drip, drip right to the back of my throat. And that is when I wake up.
Any Freudian pyschoanalists who happened to chance upon this piece of navel gazing, might be forgiven for concluding that the nightmare has its roots in my childhood. And he/she couldn’t be far wrong.
Growing up in a household with siblings who refuse to grow old, we are forever at the mercy of those more creative and innovative in ways that manage to make others look foolish. Take the month of Ramadan for instance. In other normal households, there are etiquettes as to how one should wake another for the sahur. You wake a person up gently, call out his or her name repeatedly until that person wakes up. But no, not in my household; that tactic is deemed too civilised.
Nursing a stomach full of delicacies Mak had prepared for berbuka, we go to sleep hoping to dream of nice things because we are told that devils and ghosts are locked away for the whole of the holy month. But of course, there are other people that should be locked up as well – people like Abang.
While Mak prepares the sahur downstairs, Pak would wake us up. Gently he would repeat our names in a sing song manner that served to lull us more into deep slumber.
Having failed his mission, Abang is then deployed to use any merciless tactic and device that he could think of in his waking hours. One way is to do a concoction of belacan juice, which he then carefully drips into our gaping mouth. The experience is not unlike eating otak udang, neat. On other days, it would be salt water and that leaves you with a very dry throat that you do have to wake up for a drink. Having succeeded with the mission, he’d go back to the dining table and we’d all be given applauses as we descend down the stairs, hair in disarray, eyes still half closed.
On days when the buka puasa feast proved to be more fatal and caused us deep, deep sleep, Abang would come up with another plan. Armed with a charcoal pencil, he would proceed to work on our faces. Many a times, I have woken up with a Groucho Marx like moustache or a Fu Man Chu one, which ever took his fancy.
I have yet to try these tactics in my own household now. My husband, like my father, would start with a gentle call of the name. He had tried sprinkling water, but the most effective is still to pull off the duvet. Responses range from, “in a minute,” “I know, I will wake up” to “I am not hungry”.
During my more svelte and lighter form, which must be some twenty years ago, hubby used to carry me downstairs, prop me against the sink before proceeding to wash my face with very cold water. Now, a feat like that will break his back.

Kak Teh,
Selamat berpuasa to you, AG, children and of course your tabbies.
Creative ways of stirring one up from sleep. Very funny streak your family has. Got civilsed way also.
If I must get up early but my spirit is weak, I do stretching exercise and taking deep breath.
hi&Lo, thank you. The cats will be up during sahur too. They are more enthusiastic at that time, then the kids.
At my age, I do anymore stretching, everything will hang loose!
Kak Teh, betul ke dolu dolu Awang Goneng carry Kak Teh untuk bangun sahur? cayalah! Memang respect. hehe.
Dulu, either abang or younger bro would bang on the door kalau masih jugak taknak bangun.
Anyways, Farina ucapkan Ramadhan Mubarak to Kak Teh and family.
Farina, dolu-dolu kan, kak teh kecik molek, bolehlah dukung. Sekarang boleh patah belakang, woi!!
Selamat berpusa to you too!
Kak Teh,
Very apt posting with Ramadhan coming. Wonder if it will be a long day period of fasting over yonder this year?
Don't intend to eat much for sahur this Ramadhan in the hope that my midsection will look something like the size of Awang Goneng's waist.
Selamat berpuasa to you and your family.
zawi, thank you. we dont eat much at sahur too - just a little something to accompany the children.
my AG is not too well at the moment - he's been feverish these last few days.
selamat berpuasa to you too.
Oh that's so sweet of your husband during those good ol' days --- something romantic about a splash of ice-cold water in the morning, hehe.
Hope AG gets well soon! *lots of love*
kenny dear - yes those were the days when food was already on the table before he woke me up! truly spoilt i was.
looks like he will have to be pampered these next few days!
take care!
Kak Teh, this posting brings back memories of my siblings and I getting up for sahur. I really don't know how my Mak managed to sit us in front of the dining table in the wee hours of the morning. In fact, how she managed to wake up after a 2-hour sleep is incredibly amazing (she would normally go to bed around 1-2a.m after closing her satay stall).
Now the task has fallen upon me to wake 3 'liat-to-bangun' people. Your Abang tactics sound interesting. Perhaps I should give it a try this Ramadan.
Selamat Menyambut Ramadan, Kak Teh sekeluarga.
Mak aih... pamperednya Kak Teh, siap kena dukung turun untuk sahur! La ni kalau masih liat nak bangun, kena seretlah turun tangga kot?
I don't have problems waking up for sahur - have always been a light sleeper. Even during my boarding school days I was the tukang kejut for my dormmates.
Selamat berpuasa Kak Teh, and may you have a blessed Ramadan.
To Kak Teh and family,
Selamat menyambut kedatangan Ramadhan al mubarak.
madam tai tai,
ya my mum was the same - she seemed to have boundless energy and yet had time to fulfil all our needs. Sebut saja apa nak makan, mesti dah siap atas meja. hahaha, yes try my abang's tactics..you can be as creative as you want.
pi bani, i can imagine you as the tukang kejutkan orang - mesti garang!
dolu-dolu tak pa lah dipampered. Laaaa ni, ish, susah nak kata.
mama irma, sama to you. Selamat berpuasa!
kak teh,
waking up to salt water, I have heard and experienced first hand, but belacan juice is new! How on earth did Abang come up with that! Evil, evil! Hat's off to Abang, the creative sahur waker! How does he wake up his OWN kids, I wonder.
Selamat berpuasa to you and yours.
farizahb, so you've been a victim as well!!! I bet they went to the same school for training gestapos to wake people up for sahur!
selamat berpuasa to you and yours too!
Salam Kak Teh
Mak is in Putrajaya, so this will be my first puasa without her after 11 years. So, there will not be a table laden with food at the break of fast.
Sahur? I haven't gotten up for sahur in the longest time. The other half had before threatened to call in the early morning to wake me up. I would answer the phone but to go back to bed after that.
Salam Kak Teh
Selamat Berpuasa to you and family, too.
How about"Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty" style, or go piggy back?
The easiest way to wake me up during the night or in the early morningis a tremor which I dread and fear.
assalamualaikum kak teh. been reading yr blog since early this yr n my first time leaving a note to u. i've been shy la. love the things u write. they always bring a smile to my face in the midst of hard working days. love yr cats too, they're so adorable. i just lost mine on 11 aug. she was mine for 19 yrs! i missed her so much. anyway, nvm abt that. i had actually wanted to wish u & yr lovely family 'selamat berpuasa'. Wish me luck in waking up my three darlings...semuanya bobot...mummy tak larat nak carry macam AG carry Kak Teh!! Selamat menikmati Ramadhan dan mendapat fadhilat sepenuhnya utk Kak Teh and family.
ms hart, tak ada pun yr komen sebelum ni? must be some technical problems.
Yes, good luck with your children. We have two less this month Tak lah teruk sangat.
Salaam Kak Teh.
Selamat menyambut Ramadhan. Lama tak comment kat blog Kak Teh. Currently in Mekah and this will be my first year berpuasa disini.
Bila nak mai Mekah?
alice, hahaha - only tremors can wake you up? teruklaa!! My prince charming is not so well these days, even if he wants to carry me, he cant. I think I will have to carry him! hehe!
uncle, bertuahnya dapat berpuasa di Mekah. Kak Teh memnag teringin sangat nak pergi sekali lagi. Dulu pergi buat umrah, jadi kak teh harap Uncle dapat seru supaya ada rezki kak teh sekeluarga akan dapat pergi sekali lagi.Insyaallah.
Selamat berpuasa.
My, my...
Kena dukung ka, Kok' kong, Kak Teh (bak kata oghang utagha)? And meja dah siap beghidang penuh masa tughun soq? Ish, ish, ish... bertuah badan! Hehehe...
And I remember - my Abah never let us go back to sleep straight away after sahur, and all 6 of us siblings would be propped, sitting against the wall waiting for subuh, ending up "sit-sleeping".
My second brother would then come and push the one furthest to the right or left, and all of us would fall like dominoes! (and some of us would even continue sleeping - oblivious to what had happened!)
Hmmmm, all brothers were born evil ke, Kak Teh?!!
Dear Kak Teh yang dulunya kecik molek tapi now katanya besaq sikit (masih molek I'm sure)...
This year kami posa sunyi la Kak teh. The kids are on their own since November last year, so looks like saya bersahur dengan Pak Abu aja la.
Bab angkat mengangkat macam Kak Teh dolu2.. Never! Sumpah! Dia takut sakit pinggang takleh main golf...hehehehe
Kak Teh, nak tanya la, that former svelte lady yg kena dukung for sahur masa tu dah baper anak dia?
Ramadhan Kareem wishes to u and happy National day 31 August 2008. Teringat lak dah 11 years Princess D went to heaven.
Chor, Sis#1, used to simbah us with water. No joke. But she was always thanked (by me) with a kick to the tummy.
Fortunately for her, my leg does not function so well anymore. And well, it's kinda heavy now ahahahahaha
Kak Teh,
I enjoy reading the experiences shared over here. The discipline of fasting going against the flesh, yet able to smile rather than wearing a serious look.
selamat berpose to Kak Teh & Family! and selamat merdeka lah jugak ye..
oh my god... your abang is so cheeky!!
I employ the ascending call of names and the gradually more vigorous shoulder shaking wake technique.
If that fails, I'll just leave them be and give them a good dose of "I told you so" nag when they complain about being hungry during the day.
Works so far.
Kak Teh,
Selamat berpuasa to u & family! Probably we'll see you on weekends for prayers.
From both of us,
Ms B & mini Ms B
Kak Teh
Selamat Berpuasa dan Ramadhan Al-Mubarak.
Nani

Manja sungguh k.Teh ya :)
Selamat berpuasa K.Teh & family. Salam to AG, I hope he gets well soonest.
Selamat Menyambut Ramadhan Al Mubarak - semoga semua ibadah di bulan ramadhan ini diterima dan diberkati oleh Allah SWT
Komen Pak Malim, kucing ray yang alim.
Saya tak puasa, kata Pak Malim sambil memakai kancing suasa. Tapi tuan saya beri makanan istimewa pada saya, dari pelbagai perasa mackerel, tuna, salmon, ayam dan pelbagai lagi, kata Pak Malim sambil memberus gigi. Saya rasa amat gembira, kata Pak Malim sambil memeluk kera.
Selamat Berpuasa kpd Kak Teh dan kucing-kucing yg comel, kata Pak Malim sambil mengomel.
Salam Kak Teh..
Lama tak komen..segan!
Anyway, selamat berpuasa..agak2nya apa juadah berbuka ari ni eh?
Kak Teh,
I'm Azian, Mior's (Bapak's Life) wife. Just to wish you and family a Blessed Ramadhan.
Mior sejak kahwin tak pernahnya nak carry kita... ada jer excuse...
wanshana, bukan kok kong - we say Kokko..entahlah yang mana betui.
anyway, your description of sitsleeping is not unlike ours as well. Sitting in a row - sandar dinding. satu jatuh semua jatuh! that is so funny!
Puteri, in our household pun there seems less and less and the dinner table. Now there's just 4 of us with the eldest in his own flat, and the other one somewhere in the Thar desert. But that is lif, eh? But there is joy in having them all back again..and I live for that day.
manal , masa tu adalah dua anak kut! hehe! anyway, talking abt Princess D - yes, we were on the way to Brickendonbury for the malaysia karnival - i thought of her too - the streets were strewn with flowers all the way to hertfordshire...how many years ago was that?
Dearest KakTeh, selamat menyambut Ramadhan to you and family.
ailin, wow! you are so violent! but i think anyone who simbah me with water at that time of the morning will get the same treatment too!
Hi&Lo, we are now able to look back and smile, laugh even. Those are wonderful memories. Now we are reliving them through our children.
anak mami, selamat berposa and selamat menyambut merdeka juga.
Elisa, he is creatve, I would say. Once, we had our revenge. During a hari raya gathering - he fell asleep. WE put a milk bottle in his mouth and videoed everything!
ms b, thanks and have a good ramadan to you and lil B. See you at the surau.
nani of the big apple?? Have a good ramadan to you and yours. Lama tak dengar berita.
ruby, tu masa muda - sekarang ni, kalau tak tarik telinga dia heret rambut - macam caveman dolu-dolu! hahah- itupun mungkin ada risiko patah pinggang!
mama rock, same to you too...and enjoy Ramadan and the blessings it brings.
Pak Tuo, kalau terbangun dengar ayam jantan berkokok tu mungkin dah terlambat kut! Anyway, have a good ramadan and a fruitful one.
Ubi tu bukan manja - itu dinamakan malas. Have a good Ramadan, Ubisetela.
akuni, terima kasih, kak teh pun begitu juga mengucapkan selamat berpuasa dan semoga segala ibadat kita sempurna dan diterima Allah.
pak malim, kucing posa tak, kak teh kata tapi tak gertak.
Kucing kak teh bangun sahur.
atiza, awat lama tak mai? Segan malu ka, segan malaih? Anyway, thank you for dropping by and selamat berpuasa to you and family too.
azian, ish dasyat lah mior..sekali sekala tu dukung lah!! hehehe! SElamat berpuasa kepada yan sekeluarga, Kak teh selalu juga jenguk resipi Yan. Nak kena pinjam sikit untuk masak bulan posa ni. Kak teh tak pandai masak.
OSH - selamat berpuasa to you and family. Jangan dok pergi berbasikal lagi bulan posa ni.
Salam Ramadhan Kak Teh ...
My brothers were not so evil - coz they were the ones yg liat nak bangun!
We all la ni tgh train our 7 yr old hafiz to sahur & puasa. Semalam sahur, munching with eyes closed. Totally. Half pun tak buka. hahaha... Yes, of course, I kena suapkan dia. Must remember to snap a photo during sahur 2mrw morning.
Selamat beribadah and may you find peace & blessings in this Ramadhan al Mubarak.
p/s I have to leave for London on 4th raya. Uwaaa..... sedihnya... Agak2 kalau I nak gi raya rumah Kak Teh this year, buleh ke?
Dear Kak Teh
Ada cuma sibuk sikit... Raya ni chek nak balik Msia nak raya kat Penang and Kedah...
Tak sabaq nak makan laksa kuala kedah, nasi kandaq and macam-macam ni, sekarang ni chek duk kira hari...
Salam to awang goneng and the rest of your family... termasuk si gatooo yang cute tu....
uih!! siap dukung lagi ha! manja betul kakteh nih... hahaha
my mom just yelled and yelled and yelled until i came downstairs. No tricks whatsoever. Just pure noise banging on your eardrums till u get up. It worked though.
Last night, knowing how lazy I am to wake up for sahur, but cannot afford to miss it lest my tummy acts up, I brought up snacks to my bedroom. Got up at 5, went to the bathroom with eyes half-closed and back to bed to munch on crackers and gulp down canned milo. That's my sahur for today. Hope it's enough.
Salam Ramadhan & selamat berpuasa 2u and family.
p.s dukung for sahur? oh so romantic!
Ibu, I have sent you an email - do check and yes, do contact me when you are here. I cant promise an open house but I do have kitchens in many places. Do call.

Chahya, tak romantik langsung! delete that fro your imagination.! Selamat berpuasa!
He did that 20 years ago, eh? How come nobody woke me up for sahur that way? Mmmm.
Salam Ramadan, Ah. Regards to the man. And Hello to the kids.

Selamat berpuasa dan maaf zahir batin.

Salams Kak Teh.
Have been reading yr blog for sometime but never left comments before. This topic on waking up for sahur is very interesting. So terpanggil lak nak mencoretkan comments.
The belancan thingy is so, so naughty. Kalu bukan Abang sendiri mau agaknya bertelur itu forehead, iyer tak? Cant imagine AG carrying you either...but that's so romantic, I must say.
Selamat Berpuasa to You and family.
~Kay~
hi kak teh...
puasa tahun ni lama sangat la... and it will be longer next year and the year after! how la??
hope to catch up with you soon. Ramadhan mubarak
Kak Teh,
Received SMS from Elviza of Pak Samad's passing.
I read your article in the NST on "Of Mak & Margaret Tatcher". I think it's a great piece. That question always play in my mind ~ how to care for ageing parents? Until now, I haven't got the answer..
Salam Kak Teh
Beautifully crafted; your piece can make any sahur an experience to look forward to, even if it takes belacan drips to do the business.
Thanks for sharing Kak Teh.
You do have a loving family.
Congratulations.
Here's wishing you a very happy ramadhan, with lots of barakah. And a doa for speedy recovery for sir AG too.
Salam Kakteh
I have to say I like Awang Goneng's method best :) So sweet :)
Selamat berpuasa. May your Ramadhan be blessed and your other sayang mama is off to India yet?
Rocky, anyone attempting to carry you must either be Badang or downright crazy. Selamat berpuasa - how abt hagen daaz and pulut hitam for berbuka?
has, lama tak nampak! Hope you are well. Yes, we survive on bubur lambuk during ramadan.
Mrs. N. At that time of morning mana ada romantik...?
puteri, I love the tudungs!! Nak order, boleh? Yes, I will put the link in sentraal station.
kay-leeda, thanks for the comment. I pun dah jenguk your blog. Seronoknya baca abt your travels...mind if I link you at Sentraal station? Selamat berpuasa to you too.
D, welcome back! Next year lagi panjang berpuasa - maknanya, kita semua slim!
Hi&Lo, yes, I head the news too. May he rest in peace.
Mrs N, that article is one way I cope with my guilty conscience ....not looking after her. Looking after the elderly is indeed a geat challenge. Kita nanti macam mana pulak, kan?
Count Byron, how nice to see you here again. We've missed you immensely! Thank you for your kind words - always. AG is indeed fine, thank you. Salams to you and countess.
Sunflora, yes, it was indeed the best method. Ada time buat-buat tidur! hahaaha- alas those were the days.
My nona is now in India...from agra to delhi and oi think by tomorrow in Shimla.
Salam Kak Teh – Lovely posting as always. I used to get that TLC treatment too, someone angkat from bed, dukung, basuh kan muka dan letak depan meja makan during sahur time… that person was my late grandma BTW… Cheeky nya imagine Bro AG dukung Kak Teh tu… so sweet. Your eldest and Taufik pon akan macam tu I rasa nanti :D
NJ, I dont know whether I should have included that bit of info...hehe - too much info lah!! But believe me - he didnt make it a habit - what a pity. Welcome back.
KT salaam ramadan to u.
i was reading ur previous posting on Jasper, alfatehah to him, i know the feeling. when i see the pics of ur cats in the backyard, mcm lah backyard i dipenuhi kekucing. dont we just love them to pieces???
Dear Kak Teh,
Sure...silakan lah meng-link Sembang at Kay's to your Sentraal station.
Happy Sunday and have a good week ahead :-)
~Kay~
salaam ely, hope you and family are well. yes my house, garden - full of cats. Our life wld be less exciting without them. selamat berpuasa to you too.
kay_leeda, i will, i will, and am going back to read abt yr travels.
Hey Aunty Teh,
La, sampai going into Freudian analysis adi? Dahsyat nya...
Hehe...
No ler...I spend alot of my time analysing my dreams ;) Even write it down if I remember them, and get out of bed quick enough to jot them down...
Unfortunately, most of the time, when I am fully awake and try and read what I wrote or sleepily saved as an sms-draft (when I can't find paper), sometimes the words don't make sense at all.
Like I had one sms-draft that read: "mo passagewx scabred dratsees.I.ming"
Aiyo...
salam ramadhan k.teh..!!!
=)
Kak Teh,
May I propose you add Aiman to your blog list. Found him at Elviza's under Junior Writer. He is very articulative and has the gumption to write as he sees it without fear or favour.
Aiman is a shadow of Pak Samad. His latest entry is an obituary of the great man.
Thanks
"During a hari raya gathering - he fell asleep. WE put a milk bottle in his mouth and videoed everything!"
ha ha ha!!
Daphne dear, hehe - sometimes when i read back comments i wrote in people's blogs - there's lots of gibberish. I didnt check my typos!! and my sms'es? well, i pity those who received them. Has Freud anything to say about this?
fatehah, nice to see you back here. Selamat berpuasa to you too!
Hi&Lo thanks for alerting me - i have yet to do a revamp and add more and delete some at sentraal because many blogs have gone private, without telling me! and i have alo found many interesting ones too. Need time to do that - and i think it needs a facelift as well. Thanks for telling. and one day i hope to add a blog by one Hi& Lo because I think he has a lot to blog about and shera his interesting takes on life. How do you feel about that?
Elisa, we stil do crazy things. Recently we had a sisters holiday in Geneva - we did poco-poco while walking along Lake Geneva, we did crazy things on train rides and once at home, my sisters 'tortured' me and had my children taking pictures of them doing so. That's the kind of family we are.
