Sunday, Sunday, wherefore art thou, Sunday?

What can I say but a thousand apologies if I wasn't around when you came a knocking at Choc-a-blog's door. It has been a crazy sort of week with a promise of crazier weeks to come. I was supposed to write a birthday tribute to someone I truly admire, I wanted to write and produce a video clip to someone who is now gone but not forgotten, someone who entertained and kept me company in the kitchen, someone who will be sadly missed. I will certainly do so in the next few days.

With summer comes events, visitors and most annoying thing of all the dreaded hayfever. So, although I have been poorly, I have been atchoooing my way, covering assignments and witnessing events that have made this summer bearable.

Let me share certain moments with you in pictures.

Latest pix - cleverly done by my friend elva. What do you think?

Too far to get a nice shot - but this was the Malaysia Week Gala Night at The Ranaissance Hotel London on 5th June. Performance good - food? hmmm...

Got a shot of the dancers when they weaved their way nearer to where we were sitting.

Our DPM trying a hand at making satay.

DYMM Sultan Pahang at a stall, buying chilli sauce.

I first met and interviewed Tan Sri Jins in 1990 and on 5th June at the gala night, I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw him there! Met up with him again at Covent Garden and at the risk of being called a Jins Shamsuddin stalker - I asked him again for this pix - which he kindly obliged. He looked as dashing as ever. Will try to find old pix of the first interview.

17 years later, another interview.

Will find more pix.

Great that you are keeping busy kak. I mentioned you at Jaafar Lamri, well your article actually because we were thinking of reproducing it in our www.ikmal.org publication. He recalls you as the nicest person he met during his IMO days. So, have a great day as someone is thinking (I sure there's many more) fondly of you.

Hey Kak Teh!

Just dropping by to say hi! I've been missing from blog-reading for a bit and now I have a little bit of time, gotta catch up on my Choc-a-Blog reading! ;)

Looks like London became KL Sentral for a night there. So festive!

Anyway, hope this finds you well and in the best of health. Take care, dear! :)

Kak Teh,

You have a way of making even the simplest things sound interesting...Eventhough I am living in Malaysia, and breathing it every day, I am suddenly thinking of being in London just to erm, visit 'Malaysia'...

This must be a conspiracy...Both you and JT have posted about Satays...A conspiracy to make me hungry!

Hehe...

By the way, you know, if MAS stays its route, when I go study in Canada next year (if all goes well ler), my plane transits in London for 7 hours!

J.T. said...

I agree with Daphne about your talent in making the simplest thing sound interesting.

Now ... poor Daphne, craving for satay because we both talked about it. :D

Usah mengeluh wahai adikku
Hidup insan berlorong liku
Mohon saja pada Yang Satu
Pasti hidupmu mendapat restu.

Abang Malaya sangatlah murung
Rasa duka tidak terbendung
Mengenang nasib negara yang disanjung
Pelbagai berlaku tidaklah tertanggung.

Cerita terbaru tentang universiti Malaya
Tapaknya hendak dijual kepada yang kaya
Quek Leng Chan itulah namanya
Hendak dibuat projek raksasa.

Kalau betullah cerita ini
Hilanglah maruah satu negeri
Kerajaan nampaknya tak lagi peduli
Asal ada duit semua boleh jadi.

Abang bukan budak Universiti Malaya
Cuba nak masuk tapi tak diterima
Tapi abang tetap kasih dan cinta
Sebab UM itu ikon bangsa-negara.

Apa dah jadi abang tak tahu
Negara kita semakin celaru
PM hadhari dapat isteri baru
Rakyat jelata duk tungkat dagu.

Kalau diikut rasa hati
Abang Malaya pun rasa nak lari
Ikut adik Teh ke luar negeri
Hal Malaya tak mau ambil peduli.

Tapi abang ni dah tua
Dok di negeri orang nak buat
Depa pun bukan mau nak terima
Takut mati susah pula.

Tolonglah adik nasihat Pak Lah tu
Adik ada kuasa orang TV dan radio
Tolong bagi dia tahu
Rakyat la ni sangatlah keliru.

Dah banyak harta kita dia juai
Maruah negara pun dah tergadai
Orang dok buat kita macam keldai
Pasai kita perintah negeri tak pandai.

Janganlah marah kat Abang Malaya
Kepada Adik Teh curahkan rasa
Pasai tak tau dah nak pi mana
Hidup di Malaya la ni sangat merana.

Abang Malaya minta berhenti dulu
Dekat adik abang ingat selalu
Kepada yang lain pun macam tu
I'll always love all of you.

Ohmigod ... they look like twins!!!
Everytime I mention Sean Connery's name to the other half, he'll say,' He's old, he's old."
Nanti I nak sebut nama Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin pulak depan dia. Tapi I dah boleh agak apa dia kata. "We men, we age gracefully." Hah!

Salam Kak Teh,

It’s been a while since I visited ur page, seems like I missed many as always interesting entries. Sean Connery, my all time fav hero, his ‘photo’ in songkok looks so charming dahling! And JS, he is our local version of SC, isn’t he.

ruby ahmad said...

Hi Kak Teh,

Duh..hayfever rupa nya. When I stayed there my hubby suffered too. Here's a tip that might help. It sounds yucky but worth a try. Get vaseline and use cotton buds to smear on the lining of your nose (yeah! ewwww...). The theory is, it will help to temporarily protect the lining of your nose to ward off the nasty pollens. Do this just before you step out. Please bring along the cotton buds and vaseline to replenish just like we do sun block. Good luck trying...or you are already doing this apart from other remedies. Take care sweetheart.

P.S. I might be in London this week, so if you're free and can stand a young whiny (but mysteriously charming) brat's company for a while I might get in touch. I'll email you!

Hi Kak Teh,

Tumpang lalu...Daphne, I am so used to my TKC alumni, where even if one lady and another is 40 years apart we still give the 'Kak XYZ' salutation. Now that I see you call Kak Teh, Auntie Teh...hmm...I really like my alumni's rule *chuckle*. It helps the seniors feel young still...he he. Bet you can call me Auntie Ruby (I know you would do that out of our asian respectful way), but 'Kak' lah sounds better on the blog..ha ha!

To be honest I love the 'orang putih' style. Just call anyone by first name..chewah! When I was at Uni in my teen years, I called my 60 year old lecturers by their first name, John, Pete, Merv. It broke away formality and made for better interaction. Thanks Kak Teh, just to make noise on your blog.

Abang Malaya,

Berita baru ku dengar sudah
Tapak Uni Malaya tak jadi diredah
Projek rasaksa semua orang bantah
Sebab tempat itu memang bersejarah

Saya juga bukan budak uni Malaya
Tapi rasa sayang tetapnya ada
Di situlah tempat kami berjalan bergurau senda
Pada petang hari merayau ke sana.

Abang Malaya janganlah sayu,
Kita ucapkan selamat kpd yang beristeri baru,
Semoga isteri dapat beri sokongan selalu,
ada perkembangan baru, siapalah tahu.

Abang Malaya nak lari ke mana
pasti rata ceruk dunia sudah ke sana
Sudah kecik ini dunia,
Lari ke manapun tak ada makna.

Apalah ada pada diri adik ini
setakat mencari makan sana sini
siapa nak dengar keluhan ku ini
banyak lagi yang lantang berbunyi

Terima kasih abang ingat kami semua
jasamu ku ingat selama-lama
persahabatan terjalin begitu lama
tak akan tergugat perubahan masa.
