This Sunday....

This Sunday, 19th April I will be on air again, Insyaallah. And I am hoping to talk to some people who know all there is to know about how Malaysian food has impacted the UK market.

One of them came to pursue his studies but his true vocation is in the kitchen. And it certainly proved to be the right thing to do.

When he was managing the Malaysia Hall Canteen, his koayteow goreng and mee bandong was legendary. Malaysians visitors would come back in droves for seconds. The locals became loyal customers and later close friends. The hospitality that he and his wife offer can be compared to none.

Long after their contract at the canteen ended, when it was still in Bryanston Square, people are still talking about his food. Any gatherings held at his house, you can be assured that there's standing room only. Come hari raya, even strangers make their way there after hearing the reputation and his skills in the kitchen.

Also, I am hoping to talk to another husband and wife team - old friends of ours too - who had made a success of their venture in restaurant food. They too started with Malaysia Hall canteen and then opened up one restaurant before the present Makan Cafe in Portobello.

These people are fine examples of people who work hard and make it in a foreign land.

Insyallah, traffic permitting, Sunday 19th April, if you want to join in, go to www.nusoundradio.com and click to listen live at about 1505 London time. This is The Sounds of Malaysia, community radio, thus the programme is full of advertisements.

Insyaallah, we will be on air on Nusoundradio.com 92 FM.

So, wherever you are now, if you had passed through London in the late 90's and had visited Malaysia Hall canteen during its glorious days in Bryanston Square, you must have enjoyed the hospitality and delicious food from Azhar and Ani, and later Ton Din and Midah.

I am also looking forward to play some very old Malay classics from Tok Din's collections.

So, tune in, ya?
PS - we should be on air at 1505 London time and 10.05 pm in Malaysia. Insyaallah.

Salam Kak Teh,

My semester has ended. Been busy with assignments and exams. Lama dah tak jengok sini. Hope you're well.

I do remember the Malaysia Hall Canteen. I was there for the first time from 1997 - 1999.

I'll try to remember to tune in this Sunday.

A.

SkyJuice, yes, you must have been busy sebab tak nampak pun.
If you were around here that time, you will recognise the names that I mentioned here. And their names and food are on everyone's lips for I thinkm if anything, they are the ones who put Malaysian food on the London map.

Ma'am, with those things on the your ears. You look like a pilot of a helicopter that makes a trip from base to the offshore rig.

I'd ride that helicopter every day if you were the pilot. he he.

You have a nice day, ma'am.

Kak Teh said...

Bergen, funy that you shd mention that because some years ago, I did some voice work while in a helicopter hovering over the English countryside - I was playing the role of a helicopter pilot. and I had those things on my ears as well.

Take care Bergen. If you look at my earlier postings, i think we 've been writing about themes similar.
Al Fatehah to Aunt Su.

The photo of the radio you got on the first time was good. This one is good too. Are you still searching for the right radio? That means, I gotta keep coming back.

Kak Teh said...

Bergen, I have this image of the old radio set that we used to have. Sitting around the set while listening to Kebun Pak Awang or Bangsawan di udara. But I cant seem to find it. May be it is just in my mind.

Bergen said...

The picture you have now could be one of the earliest advertisement for a transistor radio, because that one is too small to be the kinda radio you used to listen to Kebun Pak Awang. I remember the program but I don't remember Bangsawan. But I remember Fajr di Bumi Permata.

Kak Teh said...

Bergen, you must be a radio buff. I find myself being drawn back to radio these days and in my mind I have so many things that I want to do but most will remain in my dreams.

Yeahh...Kak Teh will be on air!! Akan ku cuba dengar suara mu di angin lalu...

Count me in Kak, rindu nak dengar your sweet voice and I'm sure many others feel the same way too.

Wahh..ramai yang radio buff in here. I remember this one and only ole black transistor radio we had in the house. On Saturday mornings, I'd have it so close to my ears, dengar episodes from "No 5 Persiaran Satu". Tak ingat who were the voices behind the show. But Kak Yong Tengku Mariam & Chuari Selamat were my favourites.

Salam Kak Teh,

As we were enjoying our mee bandung in London, my hubby asked, "Sayang, org kat London yg kurang bahan memasak Malaysian food pun boleh masak sedap mcm ni, i wonder kenapa mee bandung u rasa lain?"..His words cut me really deep.

Good luck Kak Teh...:)

Kak Teh said...

Pak Tuo/Adam, Thank you and thanks for the song as well but I will play this song some other sunday because this week we will be listening to old maly classics. Tok Din has some gems.

Naz, thanks...but how come I missed Fajar di Bumi Permata? hmmmmm! I remember kebun pak awang and Bangsawan di udara because my mother loved them. It was like Listening with Mother time.

Kak Teh said...

Ida, that must be his mee bandong. anyway, re: your husband, at least dia kata sayang sebagai alas cakap, kalau tidak mungkin mangkuk mee bandong dah melayang-layang, hehe. You mestilah jawab, sayang (gritting your teeth) mee bandong I yang original...London punya tak ada kat bandong.

CD, oooh, i hadly looked at that profile counter. onlywhen you mentioned it i went to look. will look again in a couple of days to see whether it has changed. But i think only new readers or readers who had just stumbled on to new blogs look at the profile. The regulars do not. That will be reflected in the stat counters on the main page.

Where have I been Kak Teh? I don't remember tasting the mee bandung. But I definitely ate more than one plate of rice when we were at Malaysia Hall canteen in the late 1990s. I do remember KI paid tribute to Tok Din. The old songs he painstakingly copied for me mostly came from Tok Din's collection.

Yay Kak Teh is back on air. Will stay tune.

Nice to hear your voice Kak Teh.I haven't had the oppurtunity to meet Pak Din and his better half.I think it was Kasbah and hubby Mike was the ori.owner of Makan Takeaway.I cant remember having a 10 pence meal at M'sia Hall but do remember the huge portion of 50 pence nice and curry and apple prepared by Pak Chik Aman.
Syed was still with Mara, before venturing into hotelier at Sussex Garden,Halim was still the night porter at M'sian Hall before venturing into his successful food catering when the kitchen was first privatised and later open up a Restuarant some way along Edgware Road.I do drop by during my last visit a while back.
Mummy Zahara of Satay House was buzy selling porceline rose Wechester flowers and the up thing those days.Including my mum brought back if I am not mistaken 3cartons full and distribute it among her sisters. It was an era where $2.70 to a pound then.Full loads of Malaysian in summer 1983/84.
No emaling and cheap sms'es,but only very rare telephone call.Letters and post cards was the only available means.I still do do have all the letters to mum during those years.Perhaps I will republish it in the blogs one fine day.
No such thing of music down load.I remember,we had a Raya gathering down at my flat at Dawson Place,I friend pun up an cassert of Ramli Sarip,'Kau yang Satu'.The whole room was stunt silence, and later one of my mate Che Mat,broke the silence with a few pearl drops on Hari Raya, shouted which stunt everbody in the room.
"AKU NAK BALIK !!!!
Yes,Kak Teh such was life then. Thus I could imagine the earlier generation of the earlier years, the generation of Arwah Uncle Majid,Pak Aman, and the sailors gang,Aunty Rok,mental agony.May Allah protect them.
Soory hijacj your space.I mean it well.
On the whole,is there any chanches you interview the Major Uncle whom serve with the RAF and went to England on bicycle from his home town some where in the 50's,I think?.He is a mentor. He is an inspiring figure.

Thanks Kak Teh

Pak Tuo

Oh noooo! Kak Teh. I missed this one. Was so ultra-busy over the last few days rushing around - didn't have the time to check emails, blogs etc till today. Is there a replay of the programme sometime this week? My father-in-law loved the old songs that you played the last time. If I were to tell him that I missed this one, he is sure to marah.
