How Do I Wake You Up, Let Me Count The Ways……

...or The Art of Waking People Up For Sahur.

In my recurring dreams, especially during this time of the year, I sit salivating before the biggest bowl of the most yumilicious bubur lambuk any mosque can offer. There are generous helpings of lamb pieces with prawns and a sprinkling of celery and crisp fried shallots floating on melting ghee. As soon as the sound of the canons fired from the state mosque is heard, and ignoring any etiquette for berbuka puasa, I’d plunge my spoon into the bowl which had been sitting there tantalising me for the past half an hour. As soon as the rich, creamy taste of the gastronomic delight hit my tastebuds, the dream turns into a nightmare. It leaves a salty, very salty taste in the mouth. At other times, it is a taste not unlike that of raw badly produced belacan, that goes drip, drip, drip right to the back of my throat. And that is when I wake up.

Any Freudian pyschoanalists who happened to chance upon this piece of navel gazing, might be forgiven for concluding that the nightmare has its roots in my childhood. And he/she couldn’t be far wrong.

Growing up in a household with siblings who refuse to grow old, we are forever at the mercy of those more creative and innovative in ways that manage to make others look foolish. Take the month of Ramadan for instance. In other normal households, there are etiquettes as to how one should wake another for the sahur. You wake a person up gently, call out his or her name repeatedly until that person wakes up. But no, not in my household; that tactic is deemed too civilised.

Nursing a stomach full of delicacies Mak had prepared for berbuka, we go to sleep hoping to dream of nice things because we are told that devils and ghosts are locked away for the whole of the holy month. But of course, there are other people that should be locked up as well – people like Abang.

While Mak prepares the sahur downstairs, Pak would wake us up. Gently he would repeat our names in a sing song manner that served to lull us more into deep slumber.

Having failed his mission, Abang is then deployed to use any merciless tactic and device that he could think of in his waking hours. One way is to do a concoction of belacan juice, which he then carefully drips into our gaping mouth. The experience is not unlike eating otak udang, neat. On other days, it would be salt water and that leaves you with a very dry throat that you do have to wake up for a drink. Having succeeded with the mission, he’d go back to the dining table and we’d all be given applauses as we descend down the stairs, hair in disarray, eyes still half closed.

On days when the buka puasa feast proved to be more fatal and caused us deep, deep sleep, Abang would come up with another plan. Armed with a charcoal pencil, he would proceed to work on our faces. Many a times, I have woken up with a Groucho Marx like moustache or a Fu Man Chu one, which ever took his fancy.

I have yet to try these tactics in my own household now. My husband, like my father, would start with a gentle call of the name. He had tried sprinkling water, but the most effective is still to pull off the duvet. Responses range from, “in a minute,” “I know, I will wake up” to “I am not hungry”.

During my more svelte and lighter form, which must be some twenty years ago, hubby used to carry me downstairs, prop me against the sink before proceeding to wash my face with very cold water. Now, a feat like that will break his back.

Selamat berpuasa and bersahur everyone!

  1. Kak Teh,

Selamat berpuasa to you, AG, children and of course your tabbies.

Creative ways of stirring one up from sleep. Very funny streak your family has. Got civilsed way also.

If I must get up early but my spirit is weak, I do stretching exercise and taking deep breath.

  2. hi&Lo, thank you. The cats will be up during sahur too. They are more enthusiastic at that time, then the kids.
At my age, I do anymore stretching, everything will hang loose!

  3. Kak Teh, betul ke dolu dolu Awang Goneng carry Kak Teh untuk bangun sahur? cayalah! Memang respect. hehe.

Dulu, either abang or younger bro would bang on the door kalau masih jugak taknak bangun.

Anyways, Farina ucapkan Ramadhan Mubarak to Kak Teh and family.

  4. Farina, dolu-dolu kan, kak teh kecik molek, bolehlah dukung. Sekarang boleh patah belakang, woi!!

  5. Kak Teh,
Very apt posting with Ramadhan coming. Wonder if it will be a long day period of fasting over yonder this year?
Don't intend to eat much for sahur this Ramadhan in the hope that my midsection will look something like the size of Awang Goneng's waist.
Selamat berpuasa to you and your family.

  6. zawi, thank you. we dont eat much at sahur too - just a little something to accompany the children.
my AG is not too well at the moment - he's been feverish these last few days.
    selamat berpuasa to you too.

Oh that's so sweet of your husband during those good ol' days --- something romantic about a splash of ice-cold water in the morning, hehe.

Hope AG gets well soon! *lots of love*

  8. kenny dear - yes those were the days when food was already on the table before he woke me up! truly spoilt i was.
looks like he will have to be pampered these next few days!
    take care!

  9. Kak Teh, this posting brings back memories of my siblings and I getting up for sahur. I really don't know how my Mak managed to sit us in front of the dining table in the wee hours of the morning. In fact, how she managed to wake up after a 2-hour sleep is incredibly amazing (she would normally go to bed around 1-2a.m after closing her satay stall).

Now the task has fallen upon me to wake 3 'liat-to-bangun' people. Your Abang tactics sound interesting. Perhaps I should give it a try this Ramadan.

Selamat Menyambut Ramadan, Kak Teh sekeluarga.

  10. Mak aih... pamperednya Kak Teh, siap kena dukung turun untuk sahur! La ni kalau masih liat nak bangun, kena seretlah turun tangga kot?

I don't have problems waking up for sahur - have always been a light sleeper. Even during my boarding school days I was the tukang kejut for my dormmates.

Selamat berpuasa Kak Teh, and may you have a blessed Ramadan.

  12. madam tai tai,
ya my mum was the same - she seemed to have boundless energy and yet had time to fulfil all our needs. Sebut saja apa nak makan, mesti dah siap atas meja. hahaha, yes try my abang's tactics..you can be as creative as you want.

pi bani, i can imagine you as the tukang kejutkan orang - mesti garang!
dolu-dolu tak pa lah dipampered. Laaaa ni, ish, susah nak kata.

mama irma, sama to you. Selamat berpuasa!

    kak teh,
waking up to salt water, I have heard and experienced first hand, but belacan juice is new! How on earth did Abang come up with that! Evil, evil! Hat's off to Abang, the creative sahur waker! How does he wake up his OWN kids, I wonder.

Selamat berpuasa to you and yours.

  14. farizahb, so you've been a victim as well!!! I bet they went to the same school for training gestapos to wake people up for sahur!

Mak is in Putrajaya, so this will be my first puasa without her after 11 years. So, there will not be a table laden with food at the break of fast.
Sahur? I haven't gotten up for sahur in the longest time. The other half had before threatened to call in the early morning to wake me up. I would answer the phone but to go back to bed after that.

  24. My, my...

Kena dukung ka, Kok' kong, Kak Teh (bak kata oghang utagha)? And meja dah siap beghidang penuh masa tughun soq? Ish, ish, ish... bertuah badan! Hehehe...

And I remember - my Abah never let us go back to sleep straight away after sahur, and all 6 of us siblings would be propped, sitting against the wall waiting for subuh, ending up "sit-sleeping".

My second brother would then come and push the one furthest to the right or left, and all of us would fall like dominoes! (and some of us would even continue sleeping - oblivious to what had happened!)

Hmmmm, all brothers were born evil ke, Kak Teh?!!

  30. oh my god... your abang is so cheeky!!

I employ the ascending call of names and the gradually more vigorous shoulder shaking wake technique.
If that fails, I'll just leave them be and give them a good dose of "I told you so" nag when they complain about being hungry during the day.

    Works so far.

my mom just yelled and yelled and yelled until i came downstairs. No tricks whatsoever. Just pure noise banging on your eardrums till u get up. It worked though.

Last night, knowing how lazy I am to wake up for sahur, but cannot afford to miss it lest my tummy acts up, I brought up snacks to my bedroom. Got up at 5, went to the bathroom with eyes half-closed and back to bed to munch on crackers and gulp down canned milo. That's my sahur for today. Hope it's enough.

Unfortunately, most of the time, when I am fully awake and try and read what I wrote or sleepily saved as an sms-draft (when I can't find paper), sometimes the words don't make sense at all.

Like I had one sms-draft that read: "mo passagewx scabred dratsees.I.ming"
