A Nation of Alphabets

A Nation of Alphabets. That came to mind when I read our newspapers online recently. I am afraid we are fast running out of alphabets. How many alphabets do we have compared to the number of datuks/dato’s? And the number keeps increasing every Sultan’s birthday. Oh help! Soon we will have to resort to the use of Arabic letters. Datok Ba, Ta, Tha etcetrea, etcetera.

I thought we only have Alphabet Soup.

First we have Dr M...there’s a good ring to it. And it was a natural progression that he is now Tun M. Then came Datuk K and you get visions of bushy moustache, millions in the bank and our CT. Though not necessarily in that order.

And now there’s a Datuk R!!! More millions and more maskawin! More oh dear.

Datuk X are those who cannot be identified in court.

Those were the days when initials were used by our singers or artistes of yore. P Ramlee, L Ramlee, R Ramlee. AR Tompel, S Ahmad and many more. Now our singers prefer to use their own name or nickname - Mawi is good, so is farah, Dayang, Ziana Zain.

In blogosphere we have our own, starting with President BTB, OSH, CK, CL, MA , Kak N, AG, KD, AM, Lady K, MM, QOTH and yes, many more.

Oh, if I am not wrong, Datok Samad Said's son, the talented and wonderful Az is actually a very clever attempt by the writer and his wife to name their son using just first and the last letter of the alphabet.

Here’s KT signing off on a lazy Sunday, in an attempt to update her blog. Btw, sometimes, I am also known as Kak Z.

Ps Someone just told me of Datuk Q!!
Lots of Datuks in a queue!!!!

    Hi KT,

RA here...ha ha ha, wish to join in the alphabet bandwagon. Gosh! Yeah! What's our country coming to?

After Datuk K's sensation, enter now Datuk R. Well any wedding less than 3.5m, should not hit any headline from now...ha ha ha. Duh! On top of that a 444, 444.44 cash gift. Mind blowing indeed. I think we have sorta lost the plot somewhere...

    Cute entry this.

  13. NKoTB signing in! :))

Great article, KT. How come all Datuks? Can a woman be Datin in her own right without her husband becoming a Datuk? Excuse me but I'm a bit ignorant here.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, Datin H, the letter is all yours!

Simah, it is the trend these days especially if you are courting a sweet young thing and you have millions in your bank account. It gives an air of mystery to it, not that you dont know who they are.

Judy, Yes, in certain states, women are conferred Datuks as well. We've got women ministers who are Datuks and some ambassadors as well. Otherwise it is not fair!

  15. KT - ni nak kira update jugak ke? Tak aci. Anyway, I have so many alphabets to remember because all the staffs in office are known by their initials. Of course none of them with Dato' or Datin.

KT, such public flaunt of sheer wealth! Don't people from the Inland Revenue read tabloids??...

    ReplyDelete
  17. the alphabets are there to be used. Kesian all the "G"s and the "Q"s and the "V"s tak ada orang pun nak claim rights to em. Always the popular "K"s and "M"s.

  18. Heheh.... Though I'd love to be known as Kak 'N' for Nita, but it doesn't seem to stick; everyone is calling me ITA. So boring!

    ReplyDelete
  19. OSH, KT ingat ni pun cukuplah untuk update. nanti bersawang pulak blog.

MI, it is indeed but let us hope the happiness last. Especially when it is so publicly displayed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mommy, Datuk X pun no takers unless they are in some court cases where they cannot be identified.

President BTB, me signing off with qkrjrl

resless, ITA not boring what! If ETA is Expected Time of Arrival, ITA is Impending Time of Arrival, no?

hubby pernah berseloroh with kids if papa gat datuk, he will go by the name datuk Z (as in Datuk zack). followed by freddy's response "muda sangat nama tu, pa!"

  30. KT, AAN baru dapat nak join "perang" alphabet ni. My former CEO's dulu2 tu semua datuk2 belaka, ada Datuk I ada Datuk M. Tapi walau pun depa ada title tu dan tua sikit lah dari Datuk R tu, tapi so far tak lah sekaya Datuk R atau Datuk K. Jadi sapa pun buat tak nampak aje lah kut kat depa tu. Harap2 UZ kat rumah, tu tak teringin nak jadi Dauk Z and start chasing young chicks.LOL

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tak kuasa dengar all these tua tak sedar diri flaunting all the wealth. Just because one person starts, the others don't have to follow.

btw, got one q. what's the different between datin and datin paduka?

  34. Hehehe, pakai alphabets just to simplify ... tak larat nak type Queen Of The House sokmo!

    ReplyDelete
  35. He he he, tak baca ker Datin M tulis in the last mingguan malaysia fasal keseronokkan orang melayu tengok lelaki separuh abad yang kaya kawin dengan wanita glamer. Gaknya Dato berletters ni tak cukup glamer kot, or Datin M nak kata orang Melayu punya definisi glamer macam tuh ler.

  36. G was here... When my children got married and have kids, I'll be known as Dato' G
